Why doesn't Linux need defragmenting?

already there is defrag for ext2.u need a livecd or another distro installed containing defrag to try it.make sure u dont mount!afaik there is not any difference.with ext4 on the anvil,the idea of defrag also is not needed!.
 
Nice one. I myself am a big fan of the ext3 file system on Linux. its very stable without any hassles of defragmenting. Always gives good performance no matter how roughly you use it.
