What is LAN IPv6 address?

My Dlink router has IPv6 options. Needless to say my ISP does not offer IPv6. When I look into IPv6 options, I find an option by the name LAN IPv6 address.
I am not much familiar with IPv6. What does this term mean and how it's related in IPv6 networking? Could someone help me understand?

Here's a snapshot. Thanks.

Thanks for the link. However nothing is mentioned about LAN IPv6 address in that article. May be it's cryptic. Sadly the inline help pages of the router are not much helpful. All it says is '
These are the settings of the LAN (Local Area Network) IPv6 interface for the router. The router's LAN IPv6 Address configuration is based on the IPv6 Address and Subnet assigned by your ISP. (A subnet with prefix /64 is supported in LAN.)'

Thanks for the guide. I tried LAN IPv6 address FEC0::1. Router saves the info but does not assign it. Basically my post was to understand what is LAN IPv6 when it comes to router.
Is it something similar to how we assign LAN IPv4 address to router like 192.168.0.1 and assign private IPv4 to LAN devices in IPv4 like 192.168.0.100/101/102 etc?

Without going into technical details, there is no point in any IPv6 settings unless your ISP supports it(which most in India don't,at least not in a manner flexible enough to easily assign IPv6 addresses over lan using a typical home router).

Yes,it is similar to how we assign IPv4 addresses over lan but as of now more complicated to make it work correctly with standard windows settings & typical home routers. In any case there isn't much point using IPv6 addresses for LAN,they are intended for internet/external/WAN IPs.

Yes, thanks for the reply. Interestingly the router won't save the settings unless LAN IPv6 address is correctly filled. So I was wondering what is relevance of LAN IPv6? This question was more from the point of understanding rather than any actual implementation as ISP anyways does not support IPv6.

As of now there is not much practical relevance of LAN IPv6 for a home user.To fully utilize it, one must have a good understanding of networking protocols & a supporting ISP/server.

Just wondering, if my ISP assigns me a IPv6 to the router, does it mean that all LAN devices connected to the router will also be assigned routable IPv6 that shall be accessible over the internet? Does IPv6 take away need for private IP and port forwarding?

Read the answer by Dieter Lievens.

Even if ISP do provide IPv6 address to router, you will have to manually enable the DHCPv6 server & set it assuming ISP also supports this type of configuration(which I doubt).

There are available provision of NAT64 which can allow to separate LAN/WANs using IPv6 and IPv4 to communicate by doing address translation from IP(v6<->v4).
