Want to study in USA

Hi friends,

If you have noticed, this is my second (counted) post in two years.
I need advice from you people.

Here's the current scenario:

I have completed my class XII and I am expecting approx 80% marks in CBSE boards. I haven't availed any kind of coaching in the past two years so it is less likely that I crack any entrance exam here.

Here's What I want:

I want to do B.Tech in Computer Science or IT.

BUT not from India, as I don't like the education system here !

I want you people to answer the queries mentioned below:

• Am I too late to go to USA in 2011 ? Because as far as I know the semester starts in September.
• What all exams I need to give for the course mentioned above ?
• What will be the fees like?
• What is the scope of scholarships for foreign students there ?
• What are the living expenses ?
• How easy is it to find part-time jobs to make your living while you are studying ?
• What is the approximate salary package one can get after studying from a mediocre university ?
• What is the scope of permanent settlement in USA ?
  

I am not very sure whether I will make it or not due to financial restrictions but I will give my best shot to get a good scholarship. I don't want to be stuck up doing B.Sc. - M.Sc. from India !

Also should I contact agencies that help you in getting through the process ?
Do they really help or are they a mere money making organizations ?

Are you Indian? You are cursing your own nation based on mere assumptions. I dont know how many countries you have studied in but as someone who returned to India only for studies I would say our country is far superior to many others in the education system.

However practically speaking. You need the following to go to US:
1.Heck lot of money (~1crore)
2.A relative or someone close in the US
3.You should have by now given a few entrance tests for universities in US (for scholarship)
4. Hone your english speaking skills (you know why); change spellings from our british english to american one when you give the TOEFL etc

The above given points are not an absolute necessity. They just help you get it faster. I know of a friend who got his visa rejected despite everything.

Good luck to you and dont get duped by agents.

An admission into some of the coaching institutes who train students for foreign entrances should brief you about all the requirements.

I can
t answer most of ur question but can answer some of them. Actually i wasn't interested much in US so never paid any attention to all Those US delegates coming to my school and explaining everything . However whatever i remember i must tell u which is:-

1) US is very expensive ( won't cost u less than 60 lakh for BTech)

2)No scholarship for UG unless u r Einstein though there r ample scholarship for PG

3) They see ur marks of 10th, 11th and 12th so if u r like me who scored good marks in 10th and 12th but got not so good marks in 11th find out a really strong reason i know there is no real reason so just use ur creativity and logic here

4) They r looking for consistency rather than marks in boards in simpler terms :-
If A get approx 80% in 10th , 11th , and 12th
and B gets 90 in 10th, 70% in 11th ,90% in 12th

candidate A is preferred

5) U should have a really good letter of recommendation , and make sure u do not copy it frm net as they check it via softwares if it is copied and if it is then u r gone

6)Those delegates told some great website of which one i remember

7)Have u appeared for SAT its compulsory 4 US??? 10 May is last date to apply for June SAt which is the only SAT remaining u can give

8)Finally US has also an office for educational programmes on Barakhamba Road (will try to find exact adress) where they give u free consultancy , have a library 4 preparing 4 SAT and help u in choosing college etc. Just go there for any of ur doubt even none go there they have real hot chicks there. (atleast those who came to my school were hot otherwise i wouldn't have heard a single sentence frm them)

Yes I am an Indian and I am not making any assumptions regarding education system of India. I have reasons to support what I say. But leave it as of now. .

Getting to the point.

1. 1 crore :O Are you serious ? That is really a hell lot of money ! But I am sure it can be reduced to a certain level with the help of scholarships.

2. Yes, I do have a lot of relatives residing in US for 5-6 years (permanently settled for life )

1. 60 Lakh still feels reasonable, though chances are still very narrow after reading the fees mentioned in both the posts.

2. One of my average friend got nearly 70-80% scholarship. So I believe there has to be a better scope for the number of scholarships available.

3. Now, what can we do if teachers don't give s good marks in class XI !
My case is also similar. (93%(X) , 65%(XI), ~80-85%(XII).

5.Yea, I know they are very strict regarding plagiarism.

7. I haven't appeared for SAT yet and I fear I might be under prepared this year. Maybe I can take up B.Sc. at DU this year and prepare for SATs next year. In case I don't get through I'll have a backup here in India

But as far as I remember it is an average university.

Instead of wasting time here asking people questions, do some research by yourself. You will find more accurate answer (seriously? 1 crore, 60 lakh, assembling PC???).

To start with, find the college you like, go through their website. You will find answers to all of your questions. If you have further questions, don't hesitate to email them or call them up. They are the most friendly people I've seen.

And as ico said, do Bachelor's from India and PG from US. Just FYI, Average PG course fees in US is $30k to $40k depending on college.

Will consider this if I am unable to make it this time.

But I would definitely try for Bachelors too !

The problem is my Dad is in a government service, so he can get educational loans easily now, but after 4 years (that is the duration of B.Tech) he has to retire, so getting loan won't be easy !

But I think M.Tech would cost lesser since it is for a shorter duration ? Am I right ?
Any idea how much a Masters degree cost in America ?

Maybe I can pursue my B.Tech here (as I have 10% chances of making to USA this time ). . . . and then do a job for 2-3 years and then do masters from USA.

But I am unsure whether I would get a good university here or not !
I didn't join any coaching centers or any tuitions. . . .I have self-studied ever since I was born !

Now, I am finding the entrance exams difficult. . .I highly doubt I will make it to a good university in India based on how my JEE/AIEEE exams went.

I will have BITS exam next. . .I am excellent at logical and reasoning part (25 questions net) but I am finding hard to cope up with PCM of entrance level (105 questions).

Also, I don't want to shell out my money on private universities, since that would completely ruin my chances for going to US for masters.

Try completing ur site. I have a good news 4 u one of my frnd got select at Georgia Tech for doing CS. HE is also gettin a 15000$ scholarship on basis of His SAT score and a good letter of recommendation.

What ico says is almost true. I was also looking for giving SAT's the last DEC, but on finding that they give a lot of importance to 11th score's and my chances grew narrow after my score was 68%. F*** practicals. The fees isn't anything near a crore, $40k-45k is the average expense in a college. Plus lodging and fooding is costly. Scholarships for bachelor's progs are very few. As I also gave AIEEE this year itself and neither I am sure about getting a rank near 10000.

I will say that doing a bachelor's here and scoring high >8.5-9 GPA on an absolute scale, not relative, will be better and then Masters can be pursued on scholarships.

Also as my brother, working at Fujitsu, told me, that if you work somewhere, you can ask your company to pay for your master's and they sign a contract with you, basically asking you to work there for a fixed period of time after completing the course. And that is easy.

Also, if you want to leave the company, then you need to pay them the amount, or you can ask another company interested in you to do so on your behalf.

I hope by now you might have already started your education in US. Usually it is not easy to study abroad in United States and get good scholarship which actually helps you. Hope you got one.

I can make a good score in Ielts but can it help me ?
