Trying to set up a home network.... Please Help

I have two PCs, a Desktop with windows 7 PRO and a laptop with win 7 Basic. I'm trying to set them up for file sharing (both sides).
I'm using a NOKIA semeins home router 1600.
Homegroup works, but speed is too low..... around 500 KBPS
Any help would be appreciated
