@priyadarshi what made u choose WD over Seagate ? even though seagate offers 5yr warranty as against WD's 3yrs.
did u run any benchmark tools ? I'm interested in its eSATA performance

the main reason to choose WD was the price i got it for Rs.7.050/- I the same features in Seagate Xtreme was available for Rs. 8.000/-. though WD offers only 3 years warranty after reading several forums and threads it was rated better in terms of reliability over seagate. also i used 3 seagate free agent go in my office 80GB and two 250GB and all got crashed for once within 6 months of purchasing it resulting into data recovery. but with WD there is no problem atleast till now.

and look at this thread for seagate warranty. *www.thinkdigit.com/forum/showthread.php?t=109014&highlight=esata+performance

but there r some drawbacks in WD too.
1. No Information on how to change the drive format from FAT32 to NTFS in case of Vista. No details how to create CD/DVD of the softwares, drivers, utilities or firmware installed on this drive. Details and how to information were not provided about softwares and utilities.
2. Should have been provided softwares, drivers, utilities or firmware's CD/DVD. eSATA cable sould have been a part of this product. with USB the data transfer rate is bit slow.
3. The drive was preformatted in FAT32. Should have left a better option to install softwares, drivers and utilities if user need to reformat the drive in NTFS.

i've not run any benchmark tool to get the performance. but u can have a look at this link for eSATA speed. there is also a review posted regarding eSATA on thinkdigit, but i can't find it right now.
there was no issue copying small files directly from Hard disk but when i copied 68.7GB of data from my 80GB external Seagate (USB casing) it took 1 hour 17 min. 28 sec. with a transfer speed of 15.1MB per sec. i guess it may be because both the source and target was using USB 2.0 hence was sharing the speed. now i'm looking for a good eSATA to eSATA cable and PCI adapter fro desktop and eSATA express card for my laptop.

Hi Friends,

I bought Western Digital MyBook Essential Edition 1 TB (USB) - Rs. 6240/- (Includes Tax) (3 Yrs. Warranty) :)

One of my friend advised not to go for Seagate External HDD as it is not reliable and some have reported crashes in their FreeAgent Models.

So I changed my mind and opted for WD. Since I already have a 250 GB WD Passport :)

Thanks to all the suggestions and replies :)

nice purchase buddy. i'm also using WD its reliable and and have better performance over seagate free agent as i experienced and also read in various forums and thread.

but are you really sure that you are getting 3 Yrs. Warranty on your MyBook Essential Edition? the following link is the reason for my doubt.

@priyadarshi
thanks for the detailed post.my issue is with the eSata port.I have read in other forums that
WD eSata port + Jmicron controller (i have a Asus m/b which uses Jmicron controller ) gives lots of issues and can affect esata performance .in that case i would have to use USB ,which in turn would make copy operations slower.

is there anybody here using the same combination i.e asus m/b + WD on esata ?

thank u blacklight for the information regarding jmicron chip. i'm planning to buy a new desktop next month and the m/b i've selected is a Gigabyte's GA-EG43M-S2H (as this board has onboard eSATA port). can u plz guide me whether this m/b uses Jmicron controller. if it is so then i'll have to think over the selection of the board again.

well i know that Asus always uses Jmicron chips for their mobos. Also MSI uses them for their IDE & SATA2 controllers. So far i have not seen Gigabyte using Jmicron.I went thru the specs of the mobo u mentioned and there's no specific mention of them using Jmicron chips on their mobos.

Also i have read that a bios update does solve some of the problems, but untill someone actually can say that for sure, its a gamble :)

Thanks for the effort u made for me dear friend.

I really liked this board bcoz of these features:
1 x D-Sub port
1 x DVI-D port
1 x HDMI port
1 x eSATA 3Gb/s port
1 x IEEE 1394a port
So, I think i should try this gambling.

hey ! no problemo ..always ready to help a friend .

yes i understand that this is one of the best vfm mobos you can get with a bit of
futureproofing for next couple of years.:) i think you should go ahead and gamble ,a driver issue (which i hope it is ) shouldnt spoil your config.

sorry about the broken link ..ya the page seems to be unavailable, try getting the google cache.
