Hi all

I am a software engg so had daily exposure of computer [CRT(17")] for 10 hours. After office, I go to my room to watch movies, surf net etc at my comp (14" CRT) . Recently i have been watching movies n surfing net on my 14" widescreen LCD acer 5500 laptop but after 1 or 1.5 hrs I m unable to concentrate as there is strain in my eyes and also headache occurs . This has never happened with my CRT(14" PC) . Is LCD laptop responsibile for this eye strain ? Any solutions for this problem .

Thanks
Sumit

Get your Eyes checked out. If you need to get spectacles then make sure you get one with an ARC coating . Always keep a distance with your monitor when watching Movies etc.

My advice.Take & break & rest as much as you can.I work at a contact centre so my job also involves sitting & gazing at the computer for 8 1/2 hours straight.I come home & sit on the internet, burn my movies & watch them.Hence more exposure.I haven't experienced any head aches as such but when my eyes start hurting I immediately turn the movie off & head of to sleep or go out with friends.Depending on what the time is.

Too much of strain is not good. With so much exposure it's not only your eyes but your back & wrist too will experience pain. It's best to leave this activities for sometime & give your body a break.Unless it's not that urgent avoid long hours on PC.:)

On a side note what's the refresh rate of your LCD screen?

I personally don't like LCD's due to the crazy viewing angles.Plus the HP monitors at my work are no good but haven't caused any eye strain upto my knowledge.I always have a minimum of 75Hz refresh rate set for my viewing. Also try reduce the contrast a bit of it's too much. This usually helps me when I am watching a movie with lights off.:)

I had the same problem. Here's what I did

1) went to Titan eye+ and got anti glare spectacles. Believe me, there is lot of difference between working with and without anti glare specs.

2) In case of strain, use "Refresh Tears" eye drops. These drops just create moisture/water in your eye coz the irritation in the eye is only due to the eye getting dried up.

I now feel lot better. No more irritation in eyes.

Price of specs:

1) frame : Rs.600
2) Lens : Essilor Crizal. Rs. 1500

You will get 7% discount if you are tata employee and you might get 10% discount if you already have any TATA product. Not tata salt :)
I flashed Titan watch and my friend is tata elxsi employee. So, I got 17% discount.

I also work for an IT firm and my advice to avoid headache and eye strain is
1.Don't gaze at ur monitor for long.i.e.,look smwhere else(a greater distance) after every 30min or so.
2.Adjust your monitor brightness and contrast.
3.Drink plenty of water.
Apart from this, take rest and go for an eye checkup..
Hope this helps.

I sit in front of Monitor for more than 12 hrs most of the days.

Here is what I did.

While I was using CRT monitor, I used anti-glare screen and believe me, it makes a big difference. I also kept teh correct refresh rate, reduced brightness a lot.

Now I am on LCD, not much eye strain, but I do not sit more than 20 mins continuously. I go downstairs every 20 mins, drink some water, look outside and then come back. The monitor is about 1 mtr from my seat too ! Yes, these things also make a big difference.

If you are having really annoying eye strain or irritation, then do not postpone the visit to an eye specialist.

First of all visit a eye doctor, for a check up.It is better to go asap or else your number will increase at a rapid rate.

And always take breaks after every hour.Look at distant objects like trees, some distant building etc.Drink lots of water.Set highest refresh rate possible for your monitor.

And take a little nap if you get time,it helps in reducing strain on your eyes.
Try it,it surely helps. :)

Once at onsite I had to work continously for 10-12 hours regularly under client pressure, infront of LCD screens.
Within one month my eyes became weak and got cylindrical powers in my lens. Also, the problem of dry eyes came in.
The best solution is to do Pranayaam daily. Also take regular brakes, drink lotss of water and give sufficient rest to your eyes ( sleep for atleast 8 hours in the night)

use a antiglare screen.set refresh rate @ max rate albeit at a lower resolution,if needed.around 1m distance distance from monitor and ur eyes.
set contrast,brightness less.
dont go for higher resolutions at the expense of lower frequencies!
there is a drop called "refresh tears" for around Rs90 which really works.available in most med shops.
and get urself a eye massager for around Rs1500 in sports/fitness centres/shops. :)

The Thread Killer >:)
1)Choose the right angle for the screen. I've seen many people lift the screen to the top rather than have it to the eye level
2)Decrease the brightness and contrast. This is a MUST!
3)Use anti-glare screen/spectacles if you want.
4)Take breaks and try to look away somewhere far every 20 mins.

Simple things make a vast difference. Wishing you a healthy and speedy recovery :)

Wire muncher!
1) Use anti-glare screens on CRTs.
2) Opt for an LCD without polarizer.
3) Do not buy laptops with insane LCD resolutions (like 1440x900 on a 14" Display!!!!)
4) Set the correct refresh-rate.
5) Reduce contrast/brightness as often as needed.
6) Take periodic breaks.
7) Don't watch movies on Laptop at close distance.
8) Let go of the "theater-style" and use sufficient lighting when watching movies on small screens.

Believe me the 3rd point is very much true! I've experienced that. I prefer 1280x800 even for a 15" LCD on laptops.
