Sound problem with VLC 0.8.6d

High without substance...
i have a win XP 64 bit and the problem is that when i play videos on there is no audio and the the volume control bar on the right of the window does not show any "green bars". these videos include .mkv extensions and some times normal avi formats too.

sorry i forgot to tell that the same files play either on winamp,wmp classic.
i did reinstall it once.

when playing the files whose sound cant b heard, go to Audio>Audio channel
see what is selected, selecting Stereo, if not alredyselected shud give u d sound


reinstall ur audio drivers and codec pack....that shud do it

Try to check out your Sound Driver files with DirectX Diagnostic test. This will provide you the exact cause of your. Folow the steps given in the link.

^ ^ vlc comes with its own codec, to my knowledge. :) anyways, did you try what slugger suggested and also updating to vlc 0.8.6e from here

i uninstalled VLC and installed the new one, its working fine so far.
thank you ppl.
but i still do not know why the problem occured in the first place.
