You wont loose the OS if you ghost it. But if you ask me, thats not the best idea - a fresh install of XP will get rid of gunk and all and is likely to give you much better performance. But for that you need an XP disc. You cant get that thru ghosting and all.

You may however not be able to ghost it in the 1st place... if you disk is returning read errors.

Like the second link says, use the Seagate tool.

I already used Active SMART and the Seagate Tool....both show a SMART fail...ActiveSMART shows my HDD health to be low and also sayd that i might have to soon chnge it....

Cant recall the details about Win backup. Never used it either. But I guess you will almost definitely loose the OS. Back up utilities are not usually ment to back up an OS!

I guess your disk will be in warranty. You should back up your imp data asap... and claim warranty.

If you can get a XP Home install CD from somewhere and then use your current serial, I guess MS might authenticate your XP as genuine. As far as I can remember, MS checks for some specific hardware to see if you are the same person. Cant recall more details at the moment. Wait and see if someone else here gives you a better answer.
