End of an era: Bhupen da dies in Mumbai

Music maestro, balladeer, singer and music composer Dr Bhupen Hazarika is no more. The veteran singer and music composer, a Dada Saheb Phalke award winner and the winner of the inaugural Assam Ratna award, died at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai at the age of 85. Assam’s last known balladeer had been undergoing treatment at the Mumbai-based hospital for over six months. But his health deteriorated last Tuesday and was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital. However, despite best efforts of the doctors to bring him to good health, he passed away around 4:35pm on Saturday. A pall of gloom descended all over Assam after Bhupen Hazarika passed away at the Mumbai hospital Saturday evening.

Dr Bhupen Hazarika was born at Sadiya in Assam. He sang his first song in the second Assamese film, Agarwala's Indramalati (Biswa Bijoy No Jowan), in 1939 when he was 12 years old.

Dr Hazarika completed his Intermediate Arts from Cotton College in 1942, and went on to Banaras Hindu University to complete his B.A. in 1944 and his M.A. in Political Science in 1946. He earned a Ph.D. from Columbia University in New York in 1952, submitting a dissertation titled "Proposals for Preparing India's Basic Education to Use Audio-Visual Techniques in Adult Education". Dr Hazarika was the president of the "Asom Sahitya Sabha" in 1993.

MY OWN THOUGHTS :

It was when I was a boy I first seen him singing on stage. I like loud music and not slow ones. So at I thought why people asked him to sing. Are they mad !! I realized my mistake later. 4 years ago, when I truly understood the meanings of his songs. I became one of his great fan. Today when I heard the news, it came as a shock to me. I have no more words to say. Thats it because I don't know what to say :sad:

Its very sad news for me.His voice was very different and unique from others.He sang many hit songs in bengali and other regional languages, which is my all time fav.

Same here. Was a big fan of the songs sang by him. RIP
