I'm thinkin of upgrading to an AMD Athlon64 3000 or 3200+. I'm planning to use the same hdd i hv now, which is a seagate barracuda 160gb. Will I be able to directly boot into XP as soon as the new mobo and processor are connected, or will I have to reinstall XP? Why I'm asking is, when I went to get this harddisk, I took my old hdd along to copy stuff from that, and when I connected that to my comp guy's comp, it refused to boot up with that configuration...makes me wonder if XP will boot only from the config with which it was installed??

see this is quite simple.....
when u install xp....it installs drivers and softwares according to the hardware present on the system at which it is being installed....example xp installs onboard vedio for via km400 chipset then install lan drivers for the motherboard, then sound drivers.

but if you attach this hdd with any other system where hardware is diff...that is where motherboard is diff with diff models of peripherals attached like sound card different graphic chipset say via km800.
so it wont boot properly.for that the other system should be having exact configuration.

so in short you have to install every time you buy new motherboard.if you buy a new processor...its not neccessory if its in 32 or 64 bits limit.

so u will have to reinstall it.

yeah! but it doesnt happen tht way in 98, does it? 98, it just starts up like normal and goes into the GUI then installs drivers. A blue screen comes up and XP Refuses to boot, i think...and XP's sposed to be an improvement over 98

Mr. d
i will explain it

when u install xp then it install some drivers for the differernt peripherels of ur computer by its own

when u boot ur coputer it tries to load the drivers

but if u change ur configuration the drivers do not match the hard ware requirements

thats why xp don't boot

for 98

98 is an outdtaed os
which doesn't has a large no. of inbuilt drivers like
xp

it has inbulit but less drivers

it can boot easily because of its outdateness

also xp has WHQL

which 98 doesn't

so at last i tell u to reinstall xp

an there is no other solution of the problem

more than post here

Of course it wont boot from your hard disc as mentioned by the members above .......different system specs different drivers needed.......

Your computer guy should have attached your hard disc along with his own and dumped your important stuff onto his hard disc. Then you should have formatted your own and re-installed xp with your system specs and then simply got data back onto your system.

Softwares unfortunately would have to be re-installed on your fresh system.

Ok guy I will tell you my recent experience which will actuall answer Mr. d's question.

I purchased a new mobo D915GAV with P4 3.0 Ghz processor. I intregrated them and then attached my old HDD (PATA) with it and surprisingly XP started but during startup XP gave a message which was actually asking me to

FIRST ACTIVATE WINDOWS XP TO CONTINUE USING WINDOWS XP ON THIS COMPUTER. TO ACTIVATE USING YOUR MODEM CLICK YES, TO SHUTDOWN CLICK NO.

On clicking YES XP took me to the activation screen I attached my Phone line to the modem and XP made a temporary connection for me (My ISP details was however asked). XP activated itself and then re-started.

I loged on to XP with my old username and pwd.

Basically it is the OS which interacts with the hardware and gives all the instructions to them. This is a very abstract view.

Now suppose if currently u are using Intel based system. So all the instructions are given to the procesor etc. are specfic to intel's pin config.

Now u suddenly change to AMD. Now what happens is that the pin config. of AMD is different from that of Intel. So naturally it can't work properly. You have to reinstall it.

And yes the problem of Drivers is there too.

Yes , however I also feel that Mr. d will be required to re-install the OS since the INF files for the chipset will be defferent , since he is going to upgrade from Intel based mobo to AMD based mobo and hence a re-install of the OS is a must.

However, there are no issues with activation and the OS can be activated after the the hardware upgrade.
