Something bothers me. If ATI is as good as you all say it is,

1. why does it have to resort to cheap marketing tricks?
2. why doesn't it bother doing something about excessive heat?
3. why doesn't it make useful/meaningful drivers?

What ati does now with its drivers is what microsoft does with their windows products, lol!
ATI releases new drivers to patch up blunders they created in the earlier versions, whereas nvidia releases new drivers to increase their performance with their cards.
its a fact.

@compaddict
lemme rephrase what you had typed earlier....
I saw it, I liked it and posted, but didn't really say a word about it anywhere in the thread because ATI is my choice too.

I AGREE TO THIS

1. I love these.
2. Seen GTX295?
3. Yes, they lag in drivers.

35k? I dont think its worth it...thats 700$ compared to 500$ in US.... I'm thinking of HD4850 crossfire...Its performance is really good at higher resolutions with the new drivers.

Don't but the GTX295, just now they will release 40nm GT212, their enthusiast card in March, and then they will launch GTX350 in Q2 2009 or early Q3 with DX11 support.

well, sooner or later we all finds that what ever we quarrel about , when it comes to buying them, we go for the affordable one that works well and provides good VFM....now who ever wins here , am with them. :)

Nvidia will live.

Either it will retain market share (It already almost OWNS the notebook and embedded market),

OR it will end up being bought by Intel to counter AMD if it fails.

2. Seen GTX295?
as far as i've read on the internet, gtx 295 consumes less power compared to 4870x2. it dissipates heat far far lesser than 4870x2.
the 4870x2 is like an oven.

but, thats what i have read. if you can w8 till june, im heading off to buy a gtx 295 around that time & then i can tell you my own personal experience with that card. but yes i have already tried 4870x2. its hot. i need to keep my side panel open at all times if im to play assasins creed or crysis warhead with 4870x2.

im actually waiting for ati to release their 5800 series. love to see how hot those would run. lol.

^Why are you so biased?

ATi were no where near the competetion till the release of the 4xxx series, due to these competetions WE are seing lower and lower prices from both vompanies...Isnt that a good thing for the consumer?...An yes I agree ATi's cards DO run hot but on the other hand, If you are going to buy a good gaming rig, I hardly think that you are going to worry about power consumption, you are just going to look for the best vfm....In processors core i7 runs much hotter and has a 135W TDP higher than other processors but you dont see people complaining.

And its probably your cable management or maybe a cluttered cabinet thats preventing you from using a HD4870x2.

I agree with amitash.

RV770 brought ATI from nowhere to somewhere waaaaay above everybody's expectations.
The GTX200 series GPUs were once said to be the ultimate product to kill AMD.
Look what happened ?
AMD raised ATI to never seen before hights.
And CrossFireX scaling issues have long become obsolete.

And with the launch of Energy Efficient RV730 and RV710, AMD is finally able challenge nVidia in an area where it lost most of the time - portable computers.

Now that RV770 was such a big hit, I suppose AMD is going to make RV870 on the same foundation, but with a 40nm process and finally start optimising the cards for power consumption and heat dissipation. THEN we can finally see a much more matured product lineup from AMD, along with propably better drivers.

Hopefully OpenCL, OpenGL 3.0, GEM, etc would also be fully supported by the time RV870 is released.

I hope both nVidia and ATi keep beating each other again and again and with no clear winner, better performance, and price cuts each time.

GTX295 consumes less than 340W? GTX260 55nm does 189W, twice is 378W, make it a tad lesser at 360W, but still HD4870x2 is better.

While GTX295 isn't available anywhere below 500$(actually much more than 549$), HD4870x2 is already available for 439$.

I think that counts, and today, Catalyst 9.1 drivers were released, and they are really good I hear.

i'll have to check it out & get back to you as soon as i can. but allow me to not keep very high expectations from it.

@amitash
im not biased. its just that my experiences with a HD4850 & HD4870x2 have been a disappointment but nvidia products have never let my expectations down.
besides, heat is not a light thing to take. we spend quite a good amount of money on good cases & extra fans and all, then how can you say that HD4870x2 running hot doesn't bother you or anyone for that matter? people not complaining about i7 is a different thing. i don't want to get into those details. in short, its pros outweigh its cons.
and well, i did mention that whatever im saying is what i read & hear. so if you're terming me as biased then you might as well call half the world biased too :D

but yeah, +1 to ATI vs Nvidia. Price Cuts FTW.

Well, u hav to take in2 account that those who actually buy HD4870x2 do not care about power or heat
