Push pull connection

Motherboards are having one CPU FAN connector in general.
Then how to connect two fans of HSF for PUSH PULL CONFIG? googlling only shows the picture of HSF hugged by two fans but not how the actual connections are made.

PS: I am not going to OC or do anything with this as of now. Its just a knowledgebase qn.

You can connect the fans to any fan headers. The CPU_FAN marker is just indicative and it is not like if you connect any other fan to the same it won't work. You can connect any fan to any fan header on the motherboard.

Find another fan header close to the second fan and enjoy push pull.

If you are lucky, some coolers like my N620 has a single 4-pin connector for the 2 fans operating in push-pull config. Else do as Krow suggested.

XTRAFLO is a 4 pin fan with PWM . So if i connect one to 4 pin cpu fan connector and another to a 3 pin connector sacrificing the 4th pin of fan will it give any bad effect regarding cooling? This means one is spinning always @ 100% and other is controlled and spinning accordingly.

Basically this is a Y CABLE which will go into CPU FAN CONNECTOR . But is mobo get affected in supplying double power from a single fan connector in any way?

Use molex connectors or Y-cables. The airflow should be same direction on both fans.

XTRAFLO is a 4 pin fan with PWM . So if i connect one to 4 pin cpu fan connector and another to a 3 pin connector sacrificing the 4th pin of fan will it give any bad effect regarding cooling? This means one is spinning always @ 100% and other is controlled and spinning accordingly.

one fan will run ( connected to 4 Pin header ) depending on the bios setting and cpu temp at lower speed and another one ( connected to 3 Pin header ) will run at full speed but for optimum performance both fan should run at same speed IMO - the method suggested by asingh is great for running those fans at same speed

One molex you cannot control the fan.

Using Y-connector on single PWM pin will not cause harm.

using one fan connected to to PSu molex plug and one fan on 3 pin mobo header - you can still run both fans at max speed possible - jus in bios settings make sure fan speed control settings are disables.

if you connect a 4 pin PWM fan into a 2 pin molex connector you won't get any pwm feature and you won't be able to monitor the fan speed but the fan will run at max speed possible and it's completely safe but the only hitch is these type of connectors are made for 3 pin fan headers where a PWM fan uses 4 pins - so physically fitting them might be a issue.

I can't find any 4 PIN PWM to 3PIN molex CONNECTOR - so if you have PWM fans you need to connect them on mobos 4 pin or 3 pin fan header.

exactly so. I have seen that 4 pins of PWM FANS are little bigger for the two pin molex connector.
Yes i also have not seen any such connectors.
For your last line that is the solution for one single PWM fan
But if i have 2 PWM fans and i wish it to connect it as PUSH PULL what should be the connection method? My diagnosis as follows :

2 XTRAFLO PWM FANs

1) one connected in 4pin CPU FAN(PWM CONTROLLED, will spin accordingly.)
2) one connected in 3 PIN chasis fan connector.(PWM uncontrolled, 100% spinning always.)

OR

1)connected in 3 pin fan connector(chassis 1) where 4th pin is sacrificed(PWM uncontrolled, 100% spinning always)
2)connected in another 3 pin fan connector(chassis 2) where 4th pin is sacrificed(PWM uncontrolled, 100% spinning always)

OR

Y cable via mobo.


no method of connecting all via molex as there is no proper pin converter for TRUE PWM fan connection.


I think MOBO manufacs should think of giving TWO 4 PIN CPU FAN connectors in mobo as more and more overclocking is coming in its way or at least give a 4 pin molex to 3 pin or 4 pin connectors in motherboard box pack where all 3 and 4 pins physically exist .

all these came into my mind when i was trying to hookup XTRAFLO as side intake. Before that i was not aware of PWM feature. i was wondering why there is no 4pin to molex connectors given in the fan box. The cable itself is also very small. Then after goggling i find that these fans are generally for CPU cooler. And then all these qns start boggling in my mind. Anyhow i have connected it to mobo 3 pin(cha_fan2) as side intake and my mobo temp is now always at 35-37.

Thanks to all for enlighting me . Also requesting to those digitians to post pics of the connection who have PUSH PULL method in their coolers.(not the picture of HSF hugged by two fans)

This is the best method for you :

but to run the PWM fan coonnected to 4 pin header at 100% speed always you have tinker with bios setting - Disable Fan monitor and Disable Automatic/Smart Fan Control - this way both fans ( even the a PWM fan connected to a 4 pin header ) will run at maximum speed
