try the FSP Saga II 500W. its the only good unit under 3k. but with 420W power consumption? can you list the config please.

the gigabyte 460 is a good buy but in your case it has very less headroom.
especially if you add a mid range graphic card.
if you ask me i find the zebronics 550w pro and VIP gold 600W sweet deals.
pick up one of them.

buddy remove those bold marked PSUs. all those got too low 12V rail current. no way can any of them give anything near the marked output. & price wise they look even more ugly. FSP giving away 500W PSU with good 12V output (currently searching for the exact figure) & price is sweet. moreover its 80plus certified.

a good 400W unit enough.
get FSP Saga II 400W or Gigabyte 460W. it'll be enough. get Corsair CX400W if you want that extra 3yrs warranty.

although you have bought the PSU, still I would like to know.
how did you come to know that your PC consumes 420W. This rig shouldn't consume much more than 300-350W. Even that I think I'm writing quite high.
An FSP Saga II 400W would have sufficed, but good that you bought VX450, you won't need to upgrade PSU in future if you change your gfx card to a mid range one.

it isn't high. its almost the current assumption. reason: P4 power hungry. 8600GT with electrolyte caps will suck lot of current. say close to 75W. that 915 board too with electrolyte caps (all the chemical dried already) will draw lots of power.

Athlon II X2 - 65W
Athlon II X4 - 95W
gfx cards - depends, generally below 100W for a low end cards
HDD - max 10W for each HDD
so how much do motherboard, RAM & DVD Drives consume?

graphics card without the connectors, usually below 70W (75W is the limit).
HDD ---> 5W green. 10W blue & blacks.
motherboard ---> all motherboards consume same. depends on caps, chokes, the chipset. so not much of a difference.
ram & DVD write ---> no idea.
for processor, it consumes 90W if pushed to limit (95W processor). 95W or more if OC'd.

By varying the components at eXtreme power supply calculator I figured this:
RAM - 4w
DVD Writer - 27w (really huge compared to my expectations)
A regular desktop Motherboard - 35w
All are approx, slight variations may be there
So if we take the efficiency of the PSU at 80%, a 500W PSU will easily be able to supply 400W continuous power, so one can use this
Processor - 95W
regular Mobo - 35W/high end mobo - 55W
HDDx1 - 10W
RAMx2 - 8W
DVD Writer - 30W
3 Fans - 5W
So we have around 200W headroom for adding a graphics card that means it will accommodate a HD5870. So basically we cannot use a HD5870 with Corsair VX450 whereas using a regular motherboard and HD5850 should be perfectly fine with the same PSU.

no. 80% efficiency means to give you 500W of power it'll suck in more power from the mains. but of total AC power drawn. 80% will be converted to DC. rest to heat.
