I have an old computer which isnt working properly. Initially when the problem started it was restarting itself a lot. It would work for couple of minutes and then shut itself off. Sometimes when I switched it on it would take a long time to boot up. I thought its problem with virus and formatted the HDD couple of times and also reinstalled XP couple of times. Later I took that to a nearby hardware store. He told that there is some problem with the capacitors and he can fix it but later after a couple of days he is telling that the motherboard is gone bad and can't be fixed. After this it has stopped starting at all. Because I was in urgent need of a PC I upgraded to a new PC.

Now I have the old PC with Motherboard, CD ROM Drive, RAM with the cabinet. I have connected the HDD to my new computer. But the old computer i.e. the cabinet is lying at a corner without anything much to do. What should I do? Will there be any people who specialise in repairs of motherboard? I know of many hardware shops but I doubt them esp with my current experience. What should I do? Please help!

Looks like ur hardware store guy has screwed up ur mobo. Mobos once they get old are notoriously difficult to troubleshoot.

Anyways for ur remaining stuff I wud suggest if u can sell it off, just sell it for whatever price u get. RAM might fetch u some money. Else it will just lie around in a corner gathering dust wasting space in ur home :)

hey man i had this restarting problem for the past one and a half years....nobody had a soln to it........somedays back my mobo had a small blast nd it was declared dead.........so purchased a new one with a new smps nd till now it has not restarted.......i feel relieved........btw i've been facing some graphics problem with it....my new mobo model is ECS KOB845Gx,
if anyone has its drivers pls lemme know......THANX IN ADVANCE.....

if its any good, I say buy a second hand mobo, monitor in the digit bazaar. throw in a hdd.

aint worth investing a lot for an old second pc. you could cheaply setup a internet/office suite rig. don't give/sell it away unless u in need of money.

if you state ur ram and prossy, I can give better advice on what to do.

u can't do nything with the old mobo now. better use it as a toy...

Sale out that junk :p

What are you waiting for? I sale of old comp/ components when I upgrade them. They are of no use. Unless you want to keep the old one for your Kid to play Kids CDs and Dave Aladin stuff ;)

keep it in another room then! just throw in some second hand parts and put it to some use.

but if there is little you have left, and want to get rid of the old pc, then do this: if your new pc also has the same type of ram, then throw the ram in it. put that drive in a casing. it will be useful for system recovary. sell the rest.

Is it possible to sell only Processor, RAM and CD ROM Drive? I have enquired many places and they tell nobody is going to take these things individually. I dont want to invest money in repairing the motherboard again. Coz I'm sure I'm not going to get much from it!

I'm sure your old PC even in working condition will fetch more than 4k bucks. With the situation you're in and the parts you're planning to sell, I'll be surprised if you get 1k bucks.

Consider donating man. It might be a old PC for you, but there are people who would love to use that one.

well, incase you don't want to do that either, just try putting it to ANY good use.

PS: can we have a thread in the bazaar where people like him with low monetary value spare parts can try cooking up a neat system and donate it to some institution? I know it sounds too philosophical, but still... it might as well increase our reputation. ;)

I thought in the same lines. Not in bazaar, but in Chit Chat section. Don't wait for anyone just start the thread. :)

We can consider donating to Educational Institutes, NGOs, Child homes, Orphanages, etc..
