Yes, these are actually for lighting purposes. I've been experimenting with LED's for quite some time now and have designed lights using regular 5 & 8 mm LED's. I got 5 of these ultra bright LED's and driver circuits some time back, out of which three LED's died while experimenting. It was a quite a blow as at that point of time each LED costed around to Rs. 22 and that too after applying an ebay discount coupon of Rs. 100, so, I again moved to regular 8 mm led's. With the current batch of LED's I'm targetting to replace the 5 mm led lamps I've put up at places like Bathrooms & staircases in my home, and will replace CFL Lamps in places like the kitchen & on the roof.
The LED tube light doesn't look promising, as what I can see is that it uses regular 5 mm led's which are cheaper, but not that efficient at providing light than the ultra bright ones. Alternatively, you can get yourself LED Lamps from brands like Philips & Osram, which, though are expensive, over the course of time, will save enough money for you.

^^ Thanks a lot for the detailed reply, particularly thanks for warning me about the LED Tubelights that I almost fell for. Now, let's see if I can locate any retail outlet selling 8 mm Philips or Osram LEDs. Thanks again!

Sadly you won't get any SMD LEDs at chandni.
I've searched the whole chandni and exert street, before buying ~50 of them along with 15 the same kind of drivers ordered by CyberKID.

^ You can always go to ebay.in. There are literally 100's of options available on ebay, so, I think there shouldn't be any problems in buying from there. There's one seller Cyberspectrum, particularly located in Kolkata, you can check it out with him.

Guys even I was looking for these LED Tube lights. These are available in electronic shops here in Hyderabad and also available with the footpath vendor. So you guys saying these are not reliable? I need 3-4 of these. Which ones should I go for? I see Cyberkid suggesting some expensive ones. Can I have the link for these. Also any link in ebay for these?

I need these in case of powercuts as backup.

I'm suggesting the ones I feel good enough, considering the price performance ratio. The LED tubelight (strip) sjoardar was referring to seems to have regular 5 mm led's, which are not that efficient at producing light and are a pain to work upon considering the relatively large numbers of LED's required to be used. If you feel the UltraBright LED's these expensive, you can go in for the 8mm LED's but please don't go for the 5mm ones. As far as the expensive UltraBright LED's are concerned, the work I've done with these makes me feel that 10 of these (1 watt led's) are enough to replace a regular 20-23 watt CFL.
I too have been working with these LED's for the sole purpose of alternative lighting, and lighting in case of power failure. Right now I have some seriously extensive plans for my home using Alternative Power and LED lighting, so, I'm planning up things before I go in for shopping.
Though there are cheaper options available (SMD LED's) which are somewhat cheaper than the LED's I purchased/suggested, but, here the problem is that these SMD LED's don't have a heatsink, which comes in handy considering the excessive heat generated by these LED's.

As for the Ebay Link, go to ebay and search for 1 watt LED and you'll have hundreds of options to choose from.

if u guys are looking for these 1 watt LEDs for power saving, then let me tell u, the drivers, if transformer based, (read ac adapters) have energy efficiency in the range of 20-75%.

that is, to deliver 1 watt to the LED, it may draw from 1.33W to 5W from wall.

however, if they are just resistance based, its different.

@ sjoardar, d6bmg, NIGHTMARE, ajayritik, icebags : I think we should continue the LED discussions is this thread and shouldn't clutter the Post Your Latest Purchase thread with our LED discussions.
