i am thinking of buying a NVIDIA 7300 GT 512mb AGP

the card maker is point of view, it gives 3 year warranty.

my dealer quoted me 3200/-
good deal or bad?

also i need a 400w psu atleast as currently i have 300w so i am getting zebronics 400w for 410/-

i basically wanted to know the reputation of both brands

my config
AMD athlon 3000+ 754pin
msi-k8mm-v
1 gb ram

Its better idea to go for cards like 8400Gt for 3k. Its much better than 7300GT.
Or get at least 8500GT for 4k.
Zeb 400w can easily handle those cards.
If its for gaming, then i recommend at least an 8600GT for 5.5~6k.

Point Of View is a good brand.Tirupati is the official wholesaler of POV products.
U can easily get 8400GS for less price which performs equivalent of the 7300GT.

did you guys heard about AGP?
i am still stuck with,

reason for buying a new card: my current one VIA Unichome IGP pro is cr@p.
its not supported on linux, and has a crappy driver for even windows, hangs in middle, hence i need a new card

I would say it is a good deal.
But 512MB is useless for such a card..
Get a better brand 256MB 7300GT...

can't find a 256mb version:(
the only one available is 512mb,
btw where do we need more memory?

also how 512mb = 256mb sounds strange to me:eek:

hi sorry....
get 7600GS AGP. Its somewhat 3.5k and is much better than 7300GT. And as Ankur said, 512MB is waste. Go for 256Mb model, for ny cards in that range.
If u wand better future proof, then get ATI HD 2400XT or HD 2600Pro. They are DX 10.0 ready nd even HD 2400XT is better than 7300GT. 2400XT is for some 3.5k range.

GPU's like 7300,7600, 8400, 8500 nd 8600 can't utilize 512 MB effectively. This is coz, the video memory is used for storing textures nd other data in games nd all this has to be processed by GPU. The problem for such cards is the textures take much more to process[due to weak GPU compared to 7900 or 8800] than to store into or access from vidmem. So 512 MB is only needed for more powerful GPU cards like a 7900GS atleast as far as gaming is concerned.
But in animation purposes maybe 512DDR2 is better than 256DDR3.

Also even if the card is a GT, the 256MB one will have GDDR3 while 512 version will have DDR2 to bring down the cost. DDR3 has much higher bandwidth than DDR2, so in games, the DDR3 one ll be much faster than DDR2 one whether its 256 or 512. Hope u get the point.

ATI cards are not supported well on Linux, so i am sticking to nvidia.

also 7600GS is not available:(

should i get a 7300gt 256mb which costs just 200bucks lower than the 512mb version.

@gary4gar
yup, 256 ll be better. First check which one has DDR3 nd take that one whether its 256 or 512. It dun matter if both are DDR3, chose according to budget then.

please suggest, 256 or 512?

Also havin used so many cards myself i recommend a higher vRam even if the cards slow because memory bandwidth is related to memory+core and not memory alone.Its better he has more vRam so that he can store more textures and then only will his bandwidth be viable to the core.

ohh !! Better wait to increase the budget to replace the system :lol: as really its not a good idea to actually invest in AGP Grfx Card :(

Sempron 3200+ @ 1050/- + TAX
MSI M9AGM2 @ Rs. 2400/- + TAX

would run far better than your present system :lol:

^^All this just to enable casual graphics in linux??
I think AGP is better as he has no intentions of gaming!

@Harvik780
why store so much textures if the GPU can't process a quater of it in time? So What is required is a fast vram, i think even 256 is overkill.
In previous generation[GF6] also, in cards like 6600GT, higher memory clocked 128Mb version surpassed 256versions in performance by a lil margin.
BTW 7300GT isn't even powerfl as older 6600GT. So its vram requirements comes nowhere near 256. But 7300GT come in 256 nd 512 only. So 256 DDR3 ll be sufficient.
Also so much texture come only at higher resolution. 256 is more than enuf for textures of all gmes @ upto 1280*1024. And DDR3 oc better.

hey in the link, its given DDR2. Dun know if 7300Gt 256 also come in DDR2? Can nybody confirm.

Its not us who decide but the company who makes these chips,they study closely what factors effect performance,if 256MB is better theoretically that's what they place.If 256MB was placed on a chip it was certainly for a reason maybe to play older games at a resolution on 1600*1200.
Even the Geforce 2 Ultra had a 256MB version.

@Ankur Gupta

:lol: as when we are talking about Future :lol: then why not switching to AM2 platform ? where now we have some really power saver processors from AMD !!!

yeah budget is a concern thats why I said one may wait to increase their budget :D

By the way, if Vista runs coool with 6200 LE then I dont think there would be any Linux which would need a better grfx card than vista :lol:
