1. Budget? - <15k (flexible)
2. Display type and size? touch (best possible in terms of responsiveness and durability), around 3 inch, but not too close to 4 (too big - difficult to carry)
3. Form Factor? bar, slider, flip? Any
4. Preferred choice of brand? Samsung, HTC, Motorola
5. Preferred input method (QWERTY, touchscreen, numpad, touch-n-type). touchscreen
6. What camera option you want? Please specify need for flash, autofocus, front facing camera.> 2MP, flash, autofocus, and front facing camera are preferable but not deal breaking criterion.
7. Preferred operating system? (Android, Symbian, iOS, Windows Phone etc). Android (Because i heard its the best)
8. Preferred connectivity options (3G, Wifi etc)Please specify clearly. Wifi is a big concern and is must (as better as possible)
9. Preferred applications (Flash, Swype, GPS, etc)? GPS is must
10. Primary use of handset (multimedia, camera, mails, internet, gaming etc)? A bit of everything
11. Any specific mobile phones in consideration? HTC desire S 510e (15,990 at saholic)
12. Any other info that you want to share
I have one question, on searching HTC Desire S i found out that it goes by some names like -
* HTC Desire S (20,999 at flipkart) HTC Desire S (Black)
* HTC Desire S (S510e) (15,990 at saholic) HTC Desire S S510e
* HTC Saga
Are all these the same model or is there any difference?

The best option right now is One V.
But if front facing cam is necessary for you then go for Neo V or Desire S

Thanks for the suggestion.
Would u please tell the reason for preferring One V over Desire S and Neo V?
Also do u know anything about my question concerning different names for Desire S?

not a newbie.....
Offtopic: does ICS allow native 3g video calls using front facing camera? AFAIK, gingerbread doesn't.

One V doesnt have any screen protection according to this thread - Mobile Reference Guide: May 2012
i.e it has neither "gorilla glass" nor "scratch resistant screen". Is it true? If yes then isnt its screen durability questionable?

Somenone please answer these questions -
Why is One V better than Desire S and Neo V except that it comes with ICS (which all of them will get someday anyway, if i m right)? Because in my research it seems the desire S has almost same hardware as One V.
Pros of One V -
Internal Memory -
One V - 4gb
Desire S - 1gb
OS
One V - 4
Desire S - 2.3.3

Now pros of Desire S -
RAM -
Desire S - 768 mb
One V - 512 mb
3G Download speed -
Desire S - 14.4 mbps
One V - 7.2 mbps
Front Camera -
Desire S - Yes
One V - No
FM Radio -
Desire S - Yes
One V - No
Supports DLNA
Desire S - Yes
One V - No

Second question : Why does Desire S have different names, are there different models of desire S?
Third Question - Which of these has best call quality, and how does other compare?
I guess these are my final questions, please answer them.

One V comes with ICS out of the box so it will get one more update, where as Desire S comes with Gingerbread and will get ICS update in a couple of weeks hopefully so no chances of any more update for it.
Also One V has beats audio but unfortunately it doesn't comes with beats earphones but still its sound quality is supposed to be better than Desire S.
And no one used DLNA actually so it doesn't matter.
Yes the difference of RAM matters.
And I didn't noticed that One V doesn't have a radio, so thats another difference. I don't know why many companies are not putting radio in the high end mobiles these days.
And obviously as One V is new the company must have worked with the cons/issues which their previous mobiles had, so it is supposed to be a lil better model then the previous ones.
One more thing One V has got lil better looks than Desire S

For your second question, some sites mention the exact model no. while some doesn't, there is only 1 model so don't worry and it costs 16k.
Can't say about call quality but it is supposed to be same in both.

Final words:
Its a tough call between both the handsets and even Neo V comes in the league but have got to know that the viewing angles of Neo V are not good and also the build quality is just ok.

Thanks a lot for ur detailed reply.
This is new to me. Do u mean that any android device gets only one update? If its so, then this is really ridiculous.
I am not an audiophile, so a good (rather than best/excellent) audio quality will work for me. Considering this will the DS's audio quality be good enough for me, or is it bad quality (for listening mp3s with provided earphones, and loudspeaker for ringtones mainly). Is there a considerable difference in audio quality of these two devices.
I have almost ruled out Neo V. (low internal mem, screen problems, build quality), I hope its the right decision.
Little difference in looks in no big deal for me.
You said "the company must have worked with the cons/issues which their previous mobiles had". Are there any specific cons/issues in this case that are worth noting?

I had asked HTC whether One V comes with a Scratch Resistant glass or not ?

This is what they have replied :-
We would inform you that all our HTC devices are made of scratch resistant glass which resist the device from the scratch. However, we would request you to keep the device away from very sharp and pointed objects.

^^^I would not assign too much credibility to such mails from customer care folks. I'v got all kinds of rubbish replies from CC. Keep this thumb rule in mind - if a product has a +ve point, you can be terribly sure the company will tom-tom it everywhere. If they are silent about something, you can be fairly sure its not offered.

Why wonder about scratch resistance..use screen protector anyway..i'm using one with my galaxy note.

You can do that, but any screen protector will make at least a small difference to sensitivity and display quality. Besides, Gorilla glass is more shatter resistant. Screen guard cannot make it any more break resistant than it is.

The Gorilla glass is also scratch resistant but these things are not much resistant, one has to use a scratch guard

HTC replied :- This is in continuation to our previous correspondence regarding HTC ONE V device.
In this regard, we would inform you that all our HTC device are made of scratch resistant glass which resist the device from the scratches. However, it is not Gorilla glass.
