The price of petrol would be cut by Rs 2 per litre, while diesel would go down by Re 1 per litre, Union Petroleum Minister, Murli Deora, said.

The Minister will make a statement in Parliament at on fuel prices at 1600 hrs (IST). The new rates will take effect from Wednesday midnight.

Petrol and diesel were slashed following a dip in international crude prices, an issue on which Congress President Sonia Gandhi strongly favoured passing the benefit to consumers.

Hours after Sonia Gandhi made her position known at the Congress Parliamentary Party meeting, the Petroleum Minister had met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and discussed the issue.

"I have nothing to say. I will make a statement in Parliament on Wednesday," Deora had told reporters after the meeting, dropping hints that a decision to reduce fuel prices may be announced in the House.

Sonia Gandhi, while addressing the Congress Parliamentary Party meeting earlier in the day, had asked the Government to pass on the benefit of lower international crude oil prices to consumers.

Sources said while petrol sales were fetching a neat Rs 4.50 a litre profit, diesel continued to contribute to losses. Oil companies were incurring Rs 0.45 a litre loss on diesel.

The Indian basket of crude oil stood at about $67 per barrel, when petrol and diesel prices were last raised in June. Crude prices are now hovering in the range of $57-58 a barrel.

Deora said, "The Congress President had suggested passing on the benefit of fall in international oil prices to consumers. We just had a meeting on the issue and a decision would be announced in Parliament on Wednesday."

Deora refused to speculate on the quantum of reduction, saying since Parliament was in session, he would make an announcement there.

Domestic LPG and kerosene prices are being left untouched as oil companies continue to incurr Rs 152 a cylinder and Rs 14.75 a litre loss on the two fuels respectively.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Left parties, Samajwadi Party and the opposition BJP had staged a brief walkout in the Lok Sabha demanding immediate reduction in fuel prices

Fossil fuel in India is way more expensive than rest of the world, the prices are almost doubled due to taxes. Just Rs2 or 1 going down is laughable preferably not even that.

this act of govt. is really commendable and should not be laughed at. u just dont know how much the govt is criticised when the prices are raised, so they deserve a praise when they cutoff the prices.

Ur wrong, it matters greatly.

1. If u goto college which is 10 km away by car and mileage of car is 15 km/l and price increased by Rs.2, then u lose around 20-30 Rs per month. This is nothing, but read further.

2. Price increases by Rs.2, then value is added to various commodities u eat , drink , and njoy by some rupees as companies spend more on their conveyance charges. Loss here is the major. Count the commodities u use. U'll be surprised by the counted figure.

3. Prices of bus tickets may rise, cost of taxi/auto travelling increases.

4. While it hardly matters to rich class, it makes the poor people more poor. ANd india while being economically rich now, still has a major population comprising of poor people.

5. Such scenarios lead to poverty, then illteracy due to poverty and then unemployement and then it leads to rise of crime i.e robberies, thefts,murders during robberies,rise of rape cases and total destruction of human nature/mind/life.

There is much more to it if u ponder about it deeply. :)

When it was increased...WHAT U AND ME DID???
=>> PAID

When is has decreased..>WHAT WILL WE DO???
==> PAY...

Yet again after 6 months if it increases what will we do ...
=>> PAY...

At end of it what we do ..JUST PAY.....its necessity....
Common man is just gona ocmplaint for dfew days....it good to give it a thought....and ponder on the points raised by u......for poor and for rich....but at end of it how much control we have over it....NONE....

We cannot waste our time on pondering over matters we cannot control....else we could be just thinking over many more matters there in this country.....and if it is done by much of population then our country will be the best....but all RDB stuff is very difficult to happen...u (hey sorry if any way u feel this personla attack it is not buddy this just healthy discussion....i am clarifying..as members give -ve rep for this also...i haev experinced this so saying it ;) )might again come and criticise me for this...but this the FACT

Well the prices will increase again in three months from now...Because the prices are down due to lowering of international crude prices...But now again the crude prices are increasing due to various factors...

I must be the first person to say this..... WHY HAS IT DECREASED? It is unfair and it should not have..!!!! :D I use CNG in my car and I keep records of my savings by pitting against the price of petrol. If the price goes down so does my savings(comparatively).

Anyway I hope the price of vegetables also goes down because of this.....

I understand. But if people can fight over
1. REgionalism....to show their state is better
2. Religion....to show their religion is better
3. Reservation
4. Quotas
5. Worship all sorta celebrities
And like wise think absurdly and waste their time on thinking and practising many such useless things, then why can't we ponder over root cause of most social evils and real problems obstructing the development of society and human beings??

I know we can do nothing, but atleast we can educate others and spread the word so that someday if he/she becomes a politician in future, then we can be sure that he/she is different and much more educated and noble as compared to present day ministers/politicians and can think more innovatively and broadly and not like Arjun Singh etc.

I know we can do nothing, but I was just trying to show u that it matters greatly whereas u declared it that "Rs.1 or Rs.2 doesn't matters". Such thing should be thought at mass level instead ignoring and saying "what can we do"! We don't like to do anything, but at the end we like to criticise the security for not gaurding against killings,thefts,rapes etc. Why? Becoz its the most easy thing to do, to just sit around the corner and criticise like politicians. Why not help in educate others in such things? We have the net, why not make blogs for it, or spread the word with other means by spamming. We can spam such things instead of pornos and personal sites. Isn't it better?

So instead of saying "We can't do anything", think atleast of what we can do before giving ur final verdict.

Neways to gains repo points, just spread the word, u'll get enough reputes. :)

We really need to ponder on such things instead of ignoring them.

Indian politics is such that even if a person with GOOD WILL enters it ..he cannot stay the way he wants but will convert to the way others(politicians) want....hence they r called politicians else would be called social workers ;)

^^I agree but there are good people in politics too. But the only thing is that they are obstructed by their corrupt partymen to act accordingly. Only a few people think likewise about petrol,prices etc and rest tend to ignore it and later blame and criticise why prices of everything is rising.

We really can do everything if u think broadly. Reservation was announced and whole India saw peaceful protests. Imagine if students had gone violent. Thats unimaginable actually. If we create blogs and spread the word at mass level and show how crores of rupees is wasted in corruption, in implementation of inappropriate road/building designs and wasted in various oyher places like digging the same roads every year again and again, then I think the governement will be bound to think about that and balance the rise of prices by reducing such wastage as I explained.

The only thing we can do is spread the word about it. U should not be worried if ur efforts here will bring some results or not! :)

^^That is more costly. I saw, read and heard news reports in TV/newspapers/from other sources, a lot that when u fill around Rs.200 they often do not fill completely or fill in such a way that it reads "Rs.200" done on the counter but actual quantity is less than what it should be.

So they advised the people to check it more carefully by standing next to the person who fills the car's fuel tanker or tell him to fill the fuel tank completely. I usually get my car filled with Rs.500 of petrol and stand next to him. :)
