PC Configuration for a Developer

1. What is the purpose of the computer? What all applications and games are you going to run? (Stupid answers like 'gaming' or 'office work' will not work. Be exact. Which games? Which applications? Avoid the word 'et cetera.')
Ans: Development + Test Server for small s/w projects DB Servers (MySQL, Oracle Express Edition), Web Servers (Apache + nginx), Application Servers (TomCat, WebLogic, JBOSS). A little bit of movies and mid-range gaming too maybe but don't want to spend on a graphics card

2. What is your overall budget? If you can extend a bit for a more balanced configuration, then mention this too.
Ans: 30k - 35k

3. Planning to overclock?
Ans: no

4. Which Operating System are you planning to use?
Ans: Linux

5. How much hard drive space is needed?
Ans: 1TB + 1TB, possibly RAID

6. Do you want to buy a monitor? If yes, please mention which screen size and resolution do you want. If you already have a monitor and want to reuse it, again mention the size and resolution of monitor you have.
Ans: yes, 2 x 15.5 inch LCD OR 1 20 inch LCD, possibly second hand

7. Which components you DON'T want to buy or which components you already have and plan on reusing?
Ans: keyboard + mouse

8. When are you planning to buy the system?
Ans: in a month or two

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
Ans: no. will try to assemble myself

10. Where do you live? Are you buying locally? Are you open to buying stuff from online shops if you don't get locally?
Ans: pune. locally.

11. Anything else which you would like to say?
Ans: I would need a system that would provide me with a lot of processing power, and very good at multitasking. I plan to have 8 GB RAM to start with, but will soon need to go to 16GB and eventually, 32 GB. Eventually, will add a SSD when the prices come down.
Also, thanks for all replies. Cheers.

Welcome to TDF, as you have mentioned that you'll be buying PC in 1-2 months, so I want to say that prices may change over this course of time, so a rin-in-budget today may me out of budget tomorrow or vice-versa.

AMD fx 8350 (11500)
MSI 970A g46 (5300)
G.Skill RipjawsX 1600 MHz 4 GB x2 (1700x2)
Corsair CX500v2 (3500)
Dell ST2220L (8600)
WD Blue 2 TB (5800) 2x 1 TB would cost around 8000, better stick with single 2 TB

total: 38100

The processing power you'll get for the extra 3k is great.

thanks harshil. guess i will check the prices again at the time of buying. still the replies now will give me an idea of what exact components to buy.

btw, i am a little biased towards intel. i might want to go in for a quad-core core i5.

AMD's multicore setting, allows you to do the work you have mentioned more efficiently than Intel.

The work you've mentioned will love an 8 core cpu. You will get a great processing power with the fx 8350,which is a great VFM.

Opss, OP can get a GT 630 for 3k. BTW you have suggested an Intel config, don't you think an FX 8350 will be best suited for the kind of work OP is into?

Yes I think so too, an FX8350 with an Asus M5A97 motherboard for a little extra will be great. But since he wants an Intel, I gave him the option, too.
