^^ Boot using XP CD and then choose option to repair existing windows installation. In this way, u'll not loose anything and u'll be able to dual boot into XP and 2000. :)

No. u don't need to enter into "Recovery Console". Just boot using CD and follow the steps, then the wizard will automatically detect ur existing windows and will ask u whether u want to repair it or want to do a fresh installation. Just accept repair option and it'll repair ur existing XP. ;)

OK, Try this but I'm not sure whether it'll work or not?
Boot into Windows 2000 and goto following directory as mentioned in the error:

%windir%\system32\config\

Now in this folder look for a file with name "system.sav". Rename it to system and I think it should help. :)

U can choose any of following options:

1. Repair XP using XP Setup CD. It'll surely work.

2. Boot into windows 2000, insert XP Setup CD, open its contents, goto "I386" folder, copy "ntldr" and "ntdetect.com" files to C:\ drive. Now boot using XP CD and enter into "Recover Console" by pressing "R" and at command prompt, give following commands:

fixmbr
fixboot
bootcfg /scan
bootcfg /rebuild

3. Goto "%windir%\Repair" folder, copy "system" file and paste it into "%windir%\System32\Config" folder.
