i would still suggest avg free over norton paid : less resource intensive, better detection AND REMOVAL capabilities

Broken In
1.Avast
2.AVG
3.AVART Stinger(independent & free tool )

But whichever u use , must update ur antivirus database regularly[ once a week OR once in 15 days] Else none can protect u (except ur pc tecnitian who advise to format a drive after infection, joking )!!!!

Norton is very good ,but makes machine run slower.
Avg is good.machine speeds does not get slower..
BUT in case of security NORTON IS BEST.

I would suggest neither.
norton has high detection rate but leaves ur system crawling.
AVG is light but dont detect anything.

My laptop came with a registered version of Norton, but first thing I did after purchase is uninstall it! Norton consumes a lot of system resources. AVG free edition detection rates is not that good. It offers less protection against Trojans! I would recommend avast! Home edition available for free download. Here is the link...
