I went to the market to get the price of the components i am interested in buying and here are the prices i got...

Q6600...................Rs 10000
Abit IX38 Quad GT.........Rs 10700
Asus Maximus Formula....Rs 15800
Corsair 2X2GB XMS2 800MHz......Rs 6800
CM 330..................................Rs 2700
Corsair HX620 PSU...................Rs 6700
ATI 3870X2............................Rs 22500
MSI 8800GTS..........................Rs 18500

The only place i want to reduce the cost is graphic card as the overall budget is going out of my hands... the machine will be used for 3D work and gaming as well...

Do u think i can go for 8800GT 512MB or any other suggestions... please help..

Also do u think i can go for Asus Maximus instead of Abit IX38QuadGT

I suggest you go for Q9300 instead of Q6600 as Q9300 supports 1333 MHz FSB. I am planning to buy this config next week.

Intel Q9300
Asus P5KC Board
DDR 2 800 MHz 3 GB RAM
Antec Three Hundred Gamer Cabinet and
Antec 650W SMPS.

Hey, I really think 8800GT 512MB DDR3 will be fine with the config. that you have mentioned.

You can get one from XFX or MSI as per your choice. :)

Several of the "Professional graphics" or "workstation" video cards" are the same as the ones you might be more familiar with. The difference is in the BIOS and the drivers. For animation and design, the 8800 GTS would be plenty for you. It's optimized for open gl as well as all the other stuff. Repackaged, with a new name, BIOS, and drivers and supposedly you have a totally different card, for a much higher price I will add. It's different if a card is optimized for certain apps, or for certain functions. Take a look at the specs between the GTS and the "professional graphics" card you want. The GTS accelerates everything well. If money is no option..An nVidia Quadro is really the best for Maya and other 3D rendering application those require heavy lightening and geometry editing! In fact most of the nVidia range work better for maya than ATI do..
Coming to ur choice....8800GT should be the ideal choice then. Btw, 3870 could become an alternative, provided u get appropriate price!
See, it most depends upon the extent of 3D applications usage or Gaming. For typical gaming below 1280 resolutions, 9600GT seems to be the best pick! 8800GT, only becomes handy, if u are interested in playing @ higher resolutions. And thanks to more shader resources in 8800GT, games like Crysis arent much of headache! Except this 9600GT should do. See, decide urself, whether u are going to work on more shader intensive applications or games. Then 8800GT/GTS should do ok. Else, 9600GT ! (Set priority accordingly...i.e. if price, then 8800GT else 8800GTS!

what is the advantage of 9600 over 8800...

and if i want to play in high res then should i go with 8800... is it

well, the advantage constitutes 9600GT's almost 8800GT bandwidth and higher clocks. 9600GT packs Enhanced pure video settings and better instructions for memory management and is a good bit cheaper than the 8800GT. But, 8800GT on the other hand, has more shader processors and bandwidth. Even i am planning for 9600GT at the moment.
As far as i know, 8800GT excels in Crysis, than 9600GT! Thats becoz the game is shader intensive! Coming to high resolutions, 8800GT excels better than 9600GT! One more thing, 9600GT consumes ~20W less power than 8800GT !

I rather recommend 8800GT over this because at that price it is almost useless. Heard sometimes back that 8800GTS is for 14K. Besides nvidia is killing the 8800GTS so no more in production.

CM 330 getting sold for 1650+tax at www.lynx-india.com so i guess u wanna check ur price again.
And u got the best price on Quad GT.
Rest is fine.

U can same some bucks on memmory. get normal 800Mhz modules and 2*2G costs 3.5~4k.
The performance gain u get on putting that extra 3.5k on memory will be less compared to the gaming performance ull get on geting a better card for xtra 3.5k.
Try to get the HD 3870 X2. Its the mosr future proof card as of now and also very powerful. Its even powerful than 8800GT SLI in most cases and power consumption too is accepable. Just 10~15w more than an 8800GTX.

Or wait a bit longer, ATI's HD 4xxx series with GDDR5 is around the corner (mostly in June). Its expected to be 2X powerful than current HD 3xxx ones. And ATI cards wont be that costly. Even HD 3870 X2 was 25k when launched while 9800GX2 was @ 45k.

If u cant extend the budget, then 9600GT is a gud choice. Its scales unbelievably on SLI setup.
9600GT SlI > 8800 GT SLI, even if 9600GT is slower than 8800GT on single GPU setup. U can add another 9600GT later to double the performance. But ull need lots of power nd heat issues unless u have some gud cooling solution.

I am not willing to go for SLI in next 2 years or so and also the board i have shortliested is crossfire supporting...

I need a good card now... getting 23000 card will be very costly so was thinking of getting 8800GT... is that a bad thought....

Whats ur monitor? If u play at resulutions higher than 1680*1050 ,then 8800GTS wud be better, coz it much superior to 8800GT at higher resolutions.

go for 8800GT then! :)
Just make sure, u invest in good module from either EVGA/Palit/MSI ! One more thing, if possible and somehow u can invest 1.2K more...i would really suggest u to buy a CM Cool Viva Pro GPU cooler. Purchase, the cooler along with the card, if possible and install it at the same time along with AS5! That would be the finest option to do and will set you free for years to come.

Dominator is right.
U can see this and they say that Assassins creed support DX10.1. And all 3-series cards supports DX10.1 where as nvidia lacks there.

But if u are an nvidia fan, then my suggetion is to go for MSI 8800GT OC. Its almost lesser than 12K and since its an oveclocked edition, it will give better performance than any other 8800GT.
