See as now all X2 bellow 4800 comes with 1 MB L2 of same core, so will not be a huge differece between 3600+ and 4000
so, one may thing of 3600 also

See if you can go for Athlon X2 4800+, I think you can squeeze in your friend's budget as well as a 250GB SATA2 instead of the 160GB you recommended.
I use E4300, but honestly I think your friend shouldshell out the premium only if his/her works demand. Otherwise for Gaming and all AMD platform will give far better value for money as pointed out by ছোট চিতা.

@ src2206 : lemme see if we may do some perm com and get a 250GB instead of a 160GB...

Well, I am the "friend" stated here, and the comp was actually for my sis. I delayed mine fr nw.. to stress test an AMD machine, ie this one.
Here's the final config we came up wid:
AMD 3600 X2
ASUS M2N-MX (need to confirm the exact model#)
Transcend Jetram 1GB 667Ghz
Seagate 160GB SATA
16X LG DVD RW
Zebronics Bijli+Frontech 400W SMPS
Viewsonic VA1903wm 19" widescreen LCD
Microsoft Wireless Desktop Basic
Canon Printer+Scanner Combo
Creative Inspire 2.1
Shop: Supreme, Central Ave. Kolkata.
And we got the entire combi for Rs. 30,700 (incl. the printer at Rs. 3600, which ws not part of the deal initially)
But this baby packs quite a punch! Running Vista Aero butter smooth..
Still to stress test it on a few 'asking' games..
