Honestly mate, Autos might be ze saviour. But if locals and buses are crowded, then it's troublesome to move around. Plus, auto-wallahs can be rude/charge you high if yer new to the city. Same case everywhere. Need separate budget for these things as well.

donno y mumbai autowalas r rude...they just say "nahi jaenge" WTF ....I sometimes got soo irritated after asking 10s of autowallas that prefer walking 3km rather asking one more ;)

@OP Chinchpokli is right in the middle of Mumbai downtown... Mumbai town ends after Mahim, beyond that all are suburbs.

If you want to stay near to your acadamy then find a place near to Lower parel or Byculla lor sewri but again you will find these places too costly to rent or too cheap to live. Personally I won't prefer to stay in these areas. Better you find a 1 room kitchen block in Andheri East (MHADA quarters) or Chembur or Kurla and share with friend. It will cost you around 6k-7k but again travelling will be little bit hectic. I think chembur/Kurla will be cheap/better and little easy to commute.
