Let's put it straightforward. I need to upgrade the internals of the old home PC for my father. It's gonna be used for Office jobs and perhaps some 1080p movie watching. I've already selected the following configuration based on AMD processor, check it out.

UPDATE: Actually when I created the thread first in January, I presumed that a new build would be purchased on the same month, no matter what. Eventually, the purchase was postponed until May and it's May now! So, this the updated build I think I should get, post your opinions!

  • AMD Athlon II X2 240 (It rocks in that price point)
  • Biostar TA785GE 128M/TA785G3 HD (Is the second one justified, since I'm going to get a Radeon HD 4650?)
  • Corsair VS 1333 Mhz 2 GB
  • Radeon HD 4650 (I think this is one of the most VFM card we can buy today)
  • Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 @ 500GB SATA
  • Corsair CMPSU-400CX
  • Coolermaster Elite 310
  • SAMSUNG SHS223C
This PC is going to run Windows 7 64 bit/Ubuntu 64bit. I think everything is in place to run it smoothly with my configuration.

Should I go with this config? I'm still open to advices

Re: Need Basic Configuration under 10~13k

Processor: AMD AthlonII X2-240 - 2.9k
MSI 785 GM E51 - 4.6k ( DDR3 mobo )
Transcend 2x2GB DDR3 1333MHz - 5.2k
Seagate 500 GB 7200.12 - 2.3k
Gigabyte 460w - 2.2k

Total: 17.2

Going with DDR2 now in a new system is follishness

DDR2 will become obsolete and prices will rise even more

In March i bought 8x2 GB Corsair XMS2 Cl 5-5-5-15 800mhz Rams @ 1.2k

But now each Corsair 2GB XMS2 DDR2 800 mhz is 2.6k

Why go with DDR2 when DDR3 Transcend 2GB 1333mhz - 2.6k

DDR3 is futureproof

Re: Need Basic Configuration under 10~13k

Go for the Anubis' suggestion. If you are out of your budget, then go for the 2 GB module and update it later to 4 GB.
And an absolutely no no to any motherboard, based on chipset other than AMD 785 or 790. They don't support lot of the advance features requires to unleash ur new gen AMD processors. AMD 760G is a very old chipset. So never go for that one.

Re: Need Basic Configuration under 10~13k

if it is important for u to spend the minimum amount of money.. then go with ddr2 & 760g
otherwise go with ddr3 + 785g

Thanks for suggestion Anubis. But the biggest problem is, you see, the budget. It's not anyway possible to extend it upto even 15k, let alone your suggested 17k. Anyway, I think I should get something based on 785GE.

So, I'm changing the mobo on the original post.

Re: Need Basic Configuration under 10~13k

Based on Anubis' config, reduce the RAM to 1x2GB DDR3 @2.6 for the time being as it should suffice for now... Same as Cilus' suggestion. You can add another stick after prices come down a bit... This will reduce 17.2 to 14.6

Re: Need Basic Configuration under 10~13k

I understand the significance of DDR3 but unfortunately I don't have the budget to go for it. I decided to go for 785GE but that with DDR2. Check the final config in the first post.

Re: Need Basic Configuration under 10~13k

Hello All! This is my first post here. I'm unable to open a new post in this section.

I would like to upgrade my PC with DDR3 ram so that it is future proof.
Any how could any one suggest me a new PC configuration (CPU only) within a range of 15-18K.
The purpose .... I like to spend most of my time on the internet plus basic entertainment.

Re: Need Basic Configuration under 10~13k

Anyway, I decided to hold off the purchase until May this year. I hope DDR3 prices will fall further. May look into Core i3 as well by then.

Your configuration is best in that range. Go for it :)

Forget about sideport memory. ubuntu these days is so fast that these side and back port memories are not needed at all.

squeeze in cm335 if you can.
psu CPU RAM are great.

Proposing some changes to the configuration:

AMD Athlon II X3 425 (Instead of cheaper Athlon II X2, so I can unlock an extra core)
Gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H (Better vendor than Biostar as @desiibond suggests)
Corsair DDR3 2GB RAM
Asus HD 4650
Corsair CMPSU-400CX
Coolermaster Elite 310
Seagate 500GB
SAMSUNG SHS223C

one more thing u need to remember is that not all tri core Athlons and phenoms unlock to quad. if u get the one with disabled cores, u will be lucky.

u sure the board supports DDR3? may look at AMD770 chipset from gigabyte. will cost a bit less than 785G boards, as it got no IGP.

Oh sorry for not updating the thread again. Actually I'm going for the following configuration after a lot of brainstorming

AMD Athlon II X3 425
MSI 785GM-E51
Corsair DDR3 2GB RAM
Corsair CMPSU-400CX
Coolermaster Elite 310
Seagate 500GB
SAMSUNG SHS223C

Not running behind a dedicated graphics card as gaming was never the intended purpose of this configuration.
