Hi,

I had previously asked for a configuration. But my needs have changed and so has the budget. So I am starting another thread.

1. What is the purpose of the computer?

A: DVD movies, Web Surfing and rare multi threaded applications which usually opens up 5-10 IE browsers at the same time.

2. Are you open to alternate ideas/products giving similar better performance but offering more VFM/ sellers? If not- why?
A: Yes. Sure

3. What is your MAX budget?
A: 35K. [EDITED. See Softwares I might buy which is the reason I had to cut short the budget after my first post]

4. Planning to overclock?
A: NEVER

5. Which OS are you planning to use?
A: Windows Vista (I already have a legal copy) and Fedora 14 (Dual Boot)

6. How much hard drive space is needed?
A: 500GB or 1 TB. Wont be storing much. Anyway I dont want to go below 500GB

7. What resolution will the screen run at & whats the size of the screen you want?
A: HD resolution when I play HD movies. Otherwise any normal resolution will do.

8. How would you rate your hardware knowledge from the count of 1-10? (1 being the lowest, 5 being you are somewhat in sync with the current performers and 10 being the highest)
A: 6 (Although I am technically sound, I have no idea about the current hardware trends nor their prices)

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
A: Assembler

10. When are you planning to buy the system?
A: December 25-30

11. Are you one of the types looking out for "future proof" configurations?
A: Is there anything like future proof? So I think the question is really irrelevant. Last year I bought a computer for 77K and now its slightly outdated... Anyway I sold it to my cousin who needed it for some video editing.. Have been working on my lap since then. But now I need to move to somethign faster. Anyway I will drop this computer in another 2-3 years and go for MAC book.

12. Are there going to be any components that you don't want to include in this new rig? If yes, do mention.
A: Graphics Card (As I wont be into gaming). But if it is required for normal DVD playback and smooth HD movie streaming I can consider

13. Which city do you live in and are you open to buying from shops from other city/states?
A: Trivandrum, Kerala. I will prefer to buy locally

14. Mention any other points if deemed necessary
A: Yes.

I need a 22" monitor (Prefereably BenQ) as my main intension is watching movies.

Even though I mentioned 45K as my budget, if my needs can be met for 30K or 35K I am happy to go for that configuration.

I was also planning on dual booting Win vista and Fedora. I heard that HDD makers will no longer ship the current HDD's in Jan. Heard that 512 byte hard drive format is to be replaced by 4KB. I read somewhere that this can cause issues when we go for dual boot. Is this true? In that case, what steps can I take to ensure no problems occur?

I was planning on using Fedora mainly and then using Vista for runnings apps that dont work on Linux (MS OFFICE for one and some others which run specially on WIN and needs .NET 3.5).

I also need UPS price to be included in the config suggested. I will need a max of 10-15 min back up time. No more than that.

Also do you suggest I buy 2*500GB HDD instead of 1TB? Do I need to go for RAID configuration?

I have heard Seagate HDD are unreliable. So how about WD?

I will be watching a lot of DVD movies, AVI movies and some HD movies as well. Does linux have issues rendering HD movies properly? I have read somewhere that fedora has issues while Win is good and Debian/CentOS (Not sure which one was mentioned) is even better. I had a pretty powerful config in teh past and yet I have seen that my Vista machine had trouble rendering a HD movie properly.

Buying the following softwares too

WN 7- 6K
Dragon Naturally Speaking- 5K
Office- 3K
Kaspersky Internet Security- 0.9K

So need to limit the hardware budget to 35K if possible

That mobo has usb3 and sata3. If u dont need those get Gigabyte GA 880GM UD2H @ 4.5k
CM Elite 310 @ 1.5k or Elite 430 @ 2.6k are other options. GAMMA is a very nice cabby with good airflow. It has better cable management than 430.
The gpu will help in hd movie playback reducing cpu load. U may get zotac 9600gt eco @ 3.5k.

I'll go for a USB 3 and SATA 3 since its only 1K extra... If GAMMA is better I can consider that also. Considering the fact that there are not many HD movies currently available, would it be wise to spend on a graphic card just for that?

Also what is your thoguht on putting the 4.5 K into buying a better Processor?

I will be spending close to 15K for softwares. So I am planning to cut down on hardware costs. I have had problems with Vista... So i am planning to dump that and go for WIN7... Is there any rebate if you turn in your original WIN Vista copy?

I am also planning on purchasing Dragon Naturally SPeaking and MS Office Student edition

WN 7- 6K
Dragon Naturally Speaking- 5K
Office- 3K
Kaspersky Internet Security- 0.9K

Similar to Jas's config but without GPU. IMO 4250 is good enough for that.
With an option for the card later.

I had a pretty powerful config in teh past and yet I have seen that my Vista machine had trouble rendering a HD movie properly.
I can run Blu-Ray Rips (Have tried till 720p) perfectly on my crappy W7 laptop.

If you are just watching 720P movies then it is ok, but if you are an advance users and using lots of post processing shaders over the video to improve the overall quality (like YvChroma Up-scaling, Sharpening, edgesharpening, 16-255 to 0-255 or SD to HD), it will simply tearing apart the onboard GPU. I tried it myself and found out my onboard GPU is simply not able to handle that much load. And don't just talk about the 1080P contents.
Currently lots of open source or free players like VLC, Media Player Classic HomeCinema, Splayer support GPU acceleration and can apply lots of post processing shaders to the ontent.
If you don't wanna spend much money on GPU then get a Zotac 9600 GT 512 MB GDDR3 eco @ 3.6K

@ cilus

Did you get my pm buddy.

@coolguythampy

Go for a discrete gpu for stutter free hd playback. 9600gt eco should suffice or go with gt240
