First of all did you know that if iPod is completely out of battery it wants to charge for atleast 30 min before it will be detect. Second thing Iam talking about windows drivers and not the iPod firmware.
Try connecting it on your friend's computer if any one had the iPod (same model) in your group or try connecting his iPod to your computer, It will make you sure that problem is with software or hardware.
Try connecting to different port or might be data cable is faulty.
It is playing music or not?
