MUMBAI (Reuters) - India moved a step closer to banning the sale of unpackaged cigarettes, with a view to discourage smoking in a country where close to a million people each year die of tobacco-related diseases.

More than 70 percent of the cigarettes sold in India are loose.

The health ministry has accepted the recommendation of an internal panel and will seek cabinet approval before imposing the ban, Health Minister J.P. Nadda told parliament in a written statement on Tuesday

But whose there to enforce it? Will the shopkeepers deny selling loose cigarettes if they see losing a customer? Highly doubt that.

Exactly, my first step to quit smoking was to stop buying packets, Whenever I had an urge I had to walk 1km and buy a single one. So that helped me. Anyway lel govt, first banning porn, now loose cigarettes.

I don't understand logic behind this. Is government promoting to buy more cigarette by stopping loose ones. I mean if they have to ban anything ban the cigarette first not porn. No offense to any smoker over here.

This is helping to undercut illegal smugglers and cartels relying on illegal marijuana sales.

price increase will create poverty.. just extract money of out of those poor addicts and make them even more.

Cigarette is being made by machines which uses far less man power when compared to beedis which is a cottage industry entirely made by human power.
So in a way, banning Cigarette is a boon for beedi industry.
