How to reinstall OS?

I have got some prob.

I need to install OS in my laptop but the DVD Drive is not functioning..

Any alternative to install Windows?

Try USB, if your lappy can boot from USB device.

Then use thumb drive / pen drive to install the OS & verify whether the DVD drive is detected or not.

What is USB Thumb?

DVD Drive is being detected but it's not working..

Tried booting up wid a pen drive..

It says - Damaged Bootup partition...

Now, what to do?

Can you try some other CD's or DVD's in your drive ?? Check whether it reads or not ??

Thumb drive = pen drive or USB Drive.

Which OS are you using ?? I guess Win XP. Then just hit the repair & use fixmbr.

Go to a proper pc with atleast 2 gb pendrive


1) download something called win2flash and make sure you have a windows xp iso with you

2) insert pendrive and configure win2flash to transfer windows to pendrive

3) Go to laptop BIOS an enable boot from usb device

4) turn of lappy with power button
plugin pendrive and follow onscreen instructions

I've used this 2 times so far to install windows.

Boot WIN 7 from USB Drive.
Use win2flash to burn iso to any pd(4gb+).
Cant get any simpler!

two precautions prior installing :

1. Make sure the pen drive is formatted wiuth FAt file system

2. The PC ( with a DVD/CD drive ) you are using to make this bootable pen drive must be free of any kind of virus / malware etc.

I installed WIN 7 thru a pen drive (Using a tutorial of command propmt posted on thinkdigit only)..

But, the drive has got some prob..

It's not reading some disks.. (But, data discs are running properly)..

What do you mean data disc are not working ?? windows installation disc is also a data disc only.
Do you mean that Audio/Video CD/DVD are running fine.???

try thinking other way round...one set of discs are working and few are not then that doesnt necessarily mean drive has gone faulty ....maybe be discs are damaged/corrupted.

@ OP - your problem of Installing the OS is solved now ... but now you have issues with the Optical Drive of the laptop - if you want create a new thread for that in HW Q&A section.
