I don't update windows as updating it usually results in the OS going against you.
Instead, sab kutch mai manually kartha hoon.
But for My Ubuntu Feisty Fawn, I update it regularly, every day(if at all updates come everyday). Its auto update is not at all fishy, and everything is open to the user.
I used to use Autopatcher too, occasionally. But now I use another thing called offline windows updater. Its a softy that downloads the windows patches, updates, etc to a folder, creates an ISO, updates the iso regularly and the ISO can be burnt and updates can be created.
Even these updates are rare for me.
