How Important Is Motherboard For Future Proofing Your System?

Hi all,

Suppose I buy a system today and I want to keep upgrading it every 2 years. How important would be a high end motherboard? Will it be feasible to buy a high end mobo now and then keep upgrading every two years or should I settle for a mid range mobo and change it all together in the next 2 years?

U dont basically need a very high end mobo for futurproofing. A mobo selection will depend on kind of upgrades u want in future.

Decide on your upgrades. Mostly people upgrade ram, or hdd or they add a card.so having more number of slots on your motherboard is necessary
for eg. More sata ports, more pci ports, more ram slots

Forget about the future, think about now. In average, a system stays with a person for what? 3-4 years? Unless you the upgrade bug, there's nothing much to say on it. But it makes sense to buy a good board rather than a cheap board, unless you plan on troubleshooting at one point or the another, or worse end up being in the RMA que.

High end / low end. Depends what you want/need the system for. Even a high end board (say X58) can be outdated in two years -- new CPUs, connectivity methods. Nothing will guarantee a sure shot 2-3 years of future proof. As an example people with LGA775s are still using the boards with no issue. AMD boards with backward compatible socket docks are good to go still. On the flip side the latest X58 chipset will soon be 'outdated' when Sandy Bridge is let out..!

Going for a high end board is mot useful for OCing. A med end mobo is good enough if you don't do that.PS Its can still overclock.

I kinda had the same opinion.. Just wanted to know what you folks think... I am not sure whether buying system today is a good choice because technology changes rapidly. Even if you buy a system for 10000$ (Yes its possible. Head over to alienware site if you dont trust me) in a year it might not be the latest technology. Now that the latest games might come out in 3D, those who do not have a 3D card or monitor might have to shell out extra

^^when you want buy the system, are satisfied with the config, it fills your needs, get it.
tech keep changes and if we think like this we shouldn't get any pc component.

First and foremost, "futureproof" is something we only chase in our dreams.
The choice of motherboard or choice of components imho, especially pricewise, might not have much to do with the period of usage/ownership of a computer.
It is usually dependent on one's budget and requirements from that computer.
We may spend more on something important and save a bit on something not that important for us.
eg. sometimes someone may say pc mainly for music and we may suggest as powerful processor as possible, etc and there maybe hardly anything left even for a good set of speakers.
Maybe we should start off with a good/decent set of speakers and a good sound card(if reqd by buyer) and then fit in a well-balanced config in the amount left.

I personally have always valued motherboards very highly- after all it is called "mother"board for a reason- as it sort of nurtures almost all other important components.
The full potential/functionality of other components is critically dependent on the motherboard imho.
Overclocking or not, a better (and usually pricier) motherboard does offer more value in terms of better design, better build/component quality, greater reliability/stability apart from the extra features/benefits.
This depends on individual perception and is highly subjective.
eg.
One person is happy travelling in a WagonR while another does the same route in his Civic.
Fact is, both may crawl in the same traffic/pothole-infested road at not much more than 20Kmph most of the time.
Will the Civic user want to be in a WagonR or any other small car that may be much more cheaper/fuel efficient?

Sometimes, we do tend to term something as overpriced/unnecessary just cause there may be something cheaper available.

p.s. examples may not be very apt but couldn't think of better ones for now- sorry.
