GFail - Thousands of Users Lose Google Mail Data

In what could be a blow for those advocating cloud storage, Google Mail users today experienced something bizarre - their accounts were reset and they had lost all of the e-mail that was stored on their account, along with chat logs and the like. Some even reported seeing a welcome screen for first-time users when they logged in.

Epic Fail

Google, credit to them, have responded swiftly. If you check their Apps Status Dashboard out, you’ll see they’re working on fixing the issue, as well as stopping any misinformation from spreading by giving out info periodically. This issue has apparently affected 0.08% of Gmail’s users, which still amounts to around 150,000 people which is a staggering number.

Anyway, we hope for a quick fix to this problem, and that anyone who lost what could be years upon years of communication get them back. Speaking of which, were you affected?

What The.... !!!
i don't think the title "GFail" as coined by tech2.in is quite appropriate :|

google has assured the affected users that their data is safe and will be restored to their accounts as soon as possible
one third of the affected userbase have already regained access to their accounts
as of now the updated number of affected users stands at 0.02%(roughly 38,000 users), according to google's revised estimates

Uhu, Not Gonna Happen!
yeah, it has been wrongly publicized all over the internet. I understand that losing someone's data is real big deal but if Google is assuring the users that the data can be and will be restored then it should not be made this big of an issue. Glitches happen all the time in tech world, machines aren't perfect too :)

downtimes like these are part of the game ... doesnt make a service unreliable
if it happens time and again and frequently then questions can be raised

Last time, this happened to Hotmail & Flickr. In both cases, no data could be recovered.

At least Google has means of recovering the lost data.

It seems that almost all the e-mails have been restored.

Also this is a must read: How did Google lose, and find, all those e-mails? - CNN.com)

Actually, those mails had been deleted from all datacentres including all server backup copies. But Google also keeps backup offline on old-school tapes which saved the users this time.
