Gaming Rig for around 60k

1. What is the purpose of the computer? What all applications and games are you going to run? (Stupid answers like 'gaming' or 'office work' will not work. Be exact. Which games? Which applications? Avoid the word 'et cetera.')
Ans: Gaming and watching movies. Games like Max Payne 3, Diablo III, Hitman: Absolution. Also play online games like WOW, DotA2.

2. What is your overall budget? If you can extend a bit for a more balanced configuration, then mention this too.
Ans: 60k can maybe extend by 5k more if it is really worth it.

3. Planning to overclock?
Ans: Yup

4. Which Operating System are you planning to use?
Ans: Windows 7 for gaming. Ubuntu or Arch Linux for everything else.

5. How much hard drive space is needed?
Ans: 500GB or 1TB. But want an SSD as well.

6. Do you want to buy a monitor? If yes, please mention which screen size and resolution do you want. If you already have a monitor and want to reuse it, again mention the size and resolution of monitor you have.
Ans: Yes. Decided on Dell ST2220L though I dunno the actual price yet. Flipkart it says 9.1k but I hope its cheaper locally.

7. Which components you DON'T want to buy or which components you already have and plan on reusing?
Ans: Do not have any component. Was using a laptop till now but decided its not good enough for serious gaming.

8. When are you planning to buy the system?
Ans: In a month if possible.

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
Ans: Nope but am sure I can do. I have upgraded my old desktop some 5 to 6 years back. It dead long dead now.

10. Where do you live? Are you buying locally? Are you open to buying stuff from online shops if you don't get locally?
Ans: Chennai. Would buy locally if its cheaper that way. Would like to know which is better and cheaper.

11. Anything else which you would like to say?
Ans: I want suggestions on the price of all the components suggested.
And would like to know if its cheaper buying locally or online.

  • For the processor am almost decided on going for i5-2500k with a Z77 based Mobo. Yet to decide which one.
  • PSU thinking of getting Corsair TX650.
  • Cabinet 400R but would like to know the actual price.
  • GPU would like some factory OC version of HD7850. If you could tell me the particular model and price would be good.
  • Would also like suggestions for a good Keyboard and a Mouse for gaming. I type a lot and I don't necessarily need a gaming keyboard. Anything good preferably with a palm rest would do.
  • Do I necessarily need an aftermarket cooler??

Hmmm aftermarket cooler I will get when I OC which is not immediatly. UPS also Ill get later. I have speakers. Is it really worthwhile to spend so much on GTX 670? I would rather get a better processor and mobo so that I can upgrade the GPU later or XFire it when needed. What do you think? N I also mentioned that I want SSD.

If you have plan for multi-GPU setup then get a motherboard which offers 16X-16X or 8X-8X bandwidth configuration, not 16X-4X which current motherboard supports.

However, GTX 670 is a extremely good product and can handle all the gaming needs at 1080P resolution. So it will save you money for a higher end Motherboard, powerful PSU and also saves some electric bill due to lower power consumption.

Another alternate solution with a better processor/Motherboard

AMD FX 8150 8 Core @ 12K
Asrock 990FX-Extreme 3 @ 8.5K
GSKILL RipJAWSx 4 GB @ 1.5K
WD Caviar Blue 500 GB SATA II (has 2 Yrs warranty compared to 1 Yrs of Seagate)
ASUS DVD RW @ 1K
Seasonic S12 620W @ 4.5K
Gigabyte HD 7870 2 GB GDDR5 @ 22.4K
Numeric 600 VA @ 1.3K
Benq G222HDL @ 7.5K
LOGITECH COMBO @ 0.6K
NZXT SOURCE ELITE 210 @ 2.5K

Total is around 65.9K.

I understand GTX670 is good but HD7850 can be overcloacked to get almost the same FPS as 670. This is what I saw in various benchmarks. Correct me if I am wrong here. I do not plan on a multi GPU immediatly. That is much later if I really need it.

N also can u suggest an Intel processor and a board for it?

The Intel alternative will be

Core i5 2500K @ 12.8K
Asrock Z77 Extreme 4 @ 10.5K

Never ! It cant reach to performance of GTX 670 in games even if its overclocked to 1.5 GHZ ! Yes, it can beat GTX 670 in compute power.

What do you mean when you say it can't reach the performance of GTX670 but still that it can beat it in compute power?? Its kinda confusing :(

He was talking about GP-GPU computing, which is use the Graphics card to perform some computational task apart from Gaming. A lot applications like the latest versions of PhotoShop ,different Video Editors, WinZip etc can use the parallel processing power of GPU to enhance their working speed.
All those stuffs where you can use GPU instead of CPU or in collaboration with CPU are called GPU Computing where AMD HD 7870 is better performer than GTX 670.

Why are the prices so high? Today I went to one shop locally. He told me that order soon or the prices will only keep increasing. Why is this so? When can we expect the prices to come down?

The market is currently very volatile, even economists are refraining from giving a time period, probably as the euro stabilizes, the market will improve

There is an IPS panel based Full HD LED monitor available from AOC at 8.3K. For online shopping, check Primeabgb.com. I think rather than spending 8K for the TN panel based LED displays from other brands, we should go with the AOC one.

^^ They are not at all bad for gaming, it's just that some high precision FPS games might suffer due to high response times than traditional TN panel monitors. If you don't play those and are not very hardcore gamer, you won't even notice the difference.

That was the problem with older generation IPS panels which used to have high response time ( > 10 ms). Due to that they sometimes used to suffer from a Problem known as Ghosting.
All the current gen IPS panel Displays come with 5 ms or lesser response time, equivalent to the TN panels. So they are free from those problems.
