DVD Writer woes

Yesterday i burned 4 Moserbaer Pro discs, on my ASUS DRW5ST DVD Writer and all of them completed successfully, but the disc fails to open.. I tried burning with Alcohol 120% and IMGBurn, but the results are the same ..
Is it because of my writer or is this just a bad batch..
Also someting i noticed while burning, when the burn process just starts.. the write rate goes from 4x to 0x and again to 4x after sometime, then again to 0x.. until it reaches about 20 % after which it becomes a stable 6x and burns thru the end..

Why 4x only? Discs should be burning atleast at 16x.

i did set it to max, but it burned only at 4x speed

Is there any way i can check, if my dvd writer is faulty ?

EDIT:I really need some suggestions Its a brand new DVD writer non oem with 1 year warranty.. should i get it replaced ?.. i m currently trying a sony dvd..
EDIT2: The sony DVD burned like a boss.. completed within 8 mins.. after burning, it takes a loooooooooong time to read, but even then im not able to access anything on the disk as windows explorer goes "Not Responding"..
