Control Panel -> Network Connections (in classic view),
Right click on any connections you don't want showing an icon -> "Properties"
Uncheck "Show icon in notification area when connected"
OK.
On Vista:
Right click on the System tray
Notification Area
Uncheck Network.
go to control panel double click network connection then right click on "local area connection" and in properties unchk the box "show icon in notification.."
Networking isn't a task in the task manager. It will hide the icon while the network will remain active. If you want to disable the network then do what a_2_z123 said.
