I have a Fedora Core I machine. I have problems connecting to the Internet, since it checks for the dial tone before connecting. In Windows, there was an option of unchecking the 'Check for Dial tone'. Is there a way to do the same in Linux?
I have the modem installed successfully, a dial up connection set up and no other issues.

way i did it in xandros with pctel internal modem was

- from "connect to internet" go to properties > protocol and hardware > installed hardware adaptors > click on ur modem ( my case standard 56k winmodem) > properties > command

- under modem strings > highlight "dial" in first column > click on query to make it editable > add string "ATX3DT"

try connecting now .

If u have a diff modem and connection manager , try to find exact string for that modem .
