Confused: X window, desktop environment, kde...

Hello Friends,
I am starting to learn linux and am confused by certain terms..
Please help me..
I Cannot understand what an X Window System is..I dont know what a desktop environment and window manager are....I tried googling for it but could not make any headway... I cant understand how they relate to each other.. I understand that KDE and GNOME are desktop environments but what is a desktop environment..and wats the work of the x window system. What role has a window manager to play here... Totally confused... Plz help me.
