After a long time, Hello to everybody here. Since i was out of this Tech World for last 4 years, i need help in choosing SSD for my system !
My questions can be very basic (yes you can laugh)
Here is my config,
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 (2.7Ghz)
XFX 650i Ultra Mobo
4 GB DDR2 RAM
1 TB Seagate SATA II HDD
another 1 TB Seagate SATA II HDD
Corsair VX550w Power Supply
Win 7 64bit
(I have 4 sata ports in my mobo, 3 used, 1 free)

My work need speeds, i am planning to buy SSD (120 or 250GB) where i can load my win7 and other needed applications. I read good reviews about Samsung 840 series. Pls suggest me the best one, no matter which company it is. Budget is less than 10k.
Here are few questions jumping in my mind !

1. My config can handle SSD ? ( i mean, do i have ports and slots for that ?) If yes, can i powerup SSD by sata cables, the same i have in my HDD !!!

2. If I shutdown my PC, SSD data will be there on next boot ? (hehe, earlier SSDs were not saving data, may be am wrong) What if Power Goes Off for few days ?

3. How much power consumption for SSD ? Higher or lower than HDD ?

4. As far as i understand, simply buy SSD, screw it in cabinet, attach sata data cable, attach sata power cable and enjoy. Is there anything am missing ? Any motherboard settings ?

5. I heard lot about samsung 840 series, Pls suggest any brand's best SSD in my budget.

6. Can i Shift my current OS (whole C drive including OS, applications, settings & everything) to my new SSD ? If yes, how ?

Thanks for reading. Waiting for expert replies.

Answers:
1. you probably might have SATA 3GBPS which is a older standard but is compatible with newer SATA6GBPS SSD's also.
2.Nothing will happen as it is like a HDD. I myself is using Kingston V+200 256GB SSD for the past 5 months and its awesome.
3.Lower than HDD. The consumption of an SSD is 3-4w.
4.You need to set as AHCI in the SATA bios settings instead of IDE.
5.Samsung 840 Series or Samsung 840 Pro is best. Samsung 840 256GB is Rs.12,500 where as Samsung 840 Pro 256GB is Rs.16,000.
6.Shifting your OS to an SSD is complicated process and I suggest installing a fresh copy of the OS. Fresh Install is always better and the best also.

Welcome back to TDF & Tech World.

If you wish to upgrade from Conventional Mechanical HDD's to SSD, surely there's an huge bump in performance with respect to Productivity & Gaming.

Answering further..

1). Yes. Its 100% compatible. But my concern is, SSD's uses Sata III much better than Sata II, due to the bandwidth differences. But surely the Upgrade is worthy compared to Mechanical HDD's.

2). Nope. There's no such things with modern SSD's.

3). SSD's consumes very negligible power compared to Mechanical HDD's. AFAIK Mechanical HDD's consumes 5-6w, whereas SSD's are in 1-2Watts.

4). I guess, there won't be any change in the BIOS settings. Its simple plug & play. But remember never to Format a SSD unlike HDD. You need to securely Wipe or Erase the drive, otherwise it won't be detected in the BIOS.

5). Samsung 840 Series got nice reviews, also fits your budget & requirement.

6). Yes, you can shift everything from your existing HDD to SSD, by cloning the Drives. Look for Norton Ghost or some freewares.

According to your budget allocated for SSD, 840 Series 120GB cost close to 7k & 256 comes around 13k. Pick whichever is feasible.
