1. What is the purpose of the computer? What all applications and games are you going to run? (Stupid answers like 'gaming' or 'office work' will not work. Be exact. Which games? Which applications? Avoid the word 'et cetera.')
Ans: No gaming. Mainly used for MS Office 2010, 1080p movies, music, casual internet surfing (YouTube and a few other sites).

2. What is your overall budget? If you can extend a bit for a more balanced configuration, then mention this too.
Ans: INR 30,000.

3. Planning to overclock?
Ans: No.

4. Which Operating System are you planning to use?
Ans: Windows 7 / Ubuntu.

5. How much hard drive space is needed?
Ans: 500 GB.

6. Do you want to buy a monitor? If yes, please mention which screen size and resolution do you want. If you already have a monitor and want to reuse it, again mention the size and resolution of monitor you have.
Ans: Yes. Looking for a VFM 24inch Full HD monitor.

7. Which components you DON'T want to buy or which components you already have and plan on reusing?
Ans: Will a GFX card be necessary for just 1080p videos? Let me know on this guys.

8. When are you planning to buy the system?
Ans: NOV/DEC 2013

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
Ans: Will be assembling it myself.

10. Where do you live? Are you buying locally? Are you open to buying stuff from online shops if you don't get locally?
Ans: Buying locally in BLR.

11. Anything else which you would like to say?
Ans: I'd prefer an Intel based rig. [EDIT: Open to an AMD based rig.] A good set of 2.1 speakers is essential.

Thanks in advance guys. Let me know if any more information is needed from my end.

No.Inbuilt Hd 2500 igpu is more than enough to play 1080p content.

Thanks ASHISH65. Would an AMD-based rig be better for the said usage or Intel-based rig be sufficient? And just to cover all ground, how much would an equivalent AMD rig cost me?

+1 for this but you forgot about 2.1 speakers
Go for Creative SBS A335 2.1 Channel Multimedia Speakers or any other cheap offerings from creative or F&D.

Intel rig is more balanced. You can go for A10-6800K + MSI FM2-A75MA (total 14500) but i3 has slightly more processing power. A10's integrated GPU is better than iGPU but since you are not into games, stick with Intel only
