Yes it is possible, but not with the Sandybridge or even Nehalem based core i5/i3 CPU. You have to rely on old Pentium Dual core based Processors like E5800 and G41 chipset based DDR3 motherboard. They are EOL already for more than 1 years and upgrade path can be considered closed. Also they perform far lower than Athlon II X2 processors.

Intel Config is not possible unless you want Used C2D Processor + Mobo Combo :p
At your Budget AMD is the ONLY way to go.

Thanks. Ya, changing the CPU to a X3 is a good upgrade. Let OP confirm first if he can increase his budget by 1K.

Actually I have to assemble some computers for a small school. They only need it for programming and some office work and they only need Intel based config. :( Secondly, please tell me a config based on G41 and dual core processors.

I am myself a big fan of AMD, using it from the past 4 years. But I am not able to convince them to use it, that's why I asked for the Intel config...

Then get the following CPU and mobo:-

Pentium Dual Core E6600 3.06 GHz (1066 MHz FSB, 2MB L2)
Asus P5G41T-M-LX3 @ 2.45K

Note: These dual core CPUs are not Pentium D. These are based on C2D architecture with 45nm fabrication process with SSE4 instruction set disabled.
