Backup root partition

Backup solution for linux

Hi all... I have an almost stable opensuse 11.1 in my laptop now... I need to know how to backup the root partition so that at a later stage I can restore the entire OS in case it is corrupted...plz suggest an opensource software to take a backup.... I heard about clonezilla and partimage... what abt them??

Use Clonezilla to clone the root partition, though is a little difficult at first. Read its guide. What i did was to tar (make an archive) of the whole "/" partition and saved in a separate partition.

what I need is to make a backup DVD and restore the enire OS from that
dvd... is that possible??

yes like a_rahim said, you can tar the whole / partition. But you need to exclude virtual file system like /proc or /dev.

k...is that using clonezilla or just tart the whole partition?? 1 more thing I need to ask... if my backup file is more than a DVD can store, what should I do?

I used Clonezilla to create a backup... everything went well... i selected the image type as bzip but what I got was a file with extension .aa
what is the extension of clonezilla image file? is this proper?
