2 unique ip address in a network

Is it possible that more than one device have same ip address in a network

(lan)?

last day at my office incidentally i turned on wifi of my samsung galaxy note and

as i saw the wifi signals of the local network popping up. i just configured it

exactly as my desktop pc is... but there was no provision to give subnet mask (i

entered all otherr values vz proxy id and port, ip & default gateway). It got

connected. i wondered how it happened as i had a notion till then that no two

ip in a network can be unique.... but there was a problem... i could not go to

sites without a domain name (say: 10.x.x.xx) but was able to surf sites with a

domain name (say: mycompanyweb.org)... is this because of the subnet mask being avoided?

Yes , you can asign the same I.P. Address to two different NICs , but this will create an ambigous situation and usually will throw an Warning message : "IP Conflict.!". If they are on the same network.

THis is why NAT is used by routers to share the same global IP to different systems under same subnetwork.

IN such ambigous situation only one of them will be able to communicate to the router.

IP part ok....What about lack of provision to subnet mask in my galaxy note. How can i overcome that and browse all sites permitted at my network
