Air cooler suggestion

I live in a hostel and it gets bloody hot during the summer season... So, I was wondering if the air coolers that are available in the market are of any use in this kind of situation... Anyone with any experience of such air coolers???
Or, should I just buy a table fan...
P.S.: I was thinking about getting an AC but turns out you are not allowed to do that in an NIT hostel... :-(

if ur keen, buy a delhi made table fan for R500, a 20l bucket with cover, and try to make a reverse swamp cooler by putting ice in 2l bottles inside the bucket and the fan blowing air, see in youtube how to make a air conditioner yourself. if your place is not humid, it will supercool you, if it doesnt, then u can always use your table fan as a FAN, and the bucket as a dustbin or whatever!
