Google in talks with Mediatek for a 100 $ Nexus with 64 bit Cpu

Recently, a rumor surfaced saying that Google would be pushing its Nexus program to the limit with the Nexus 6 and aiming for a sub-$100 unlocked price point, rather than the $300 flagship segment. Part of getting the device cost down would be in using a MediaTek processor, and now we're getting an idea which processor that may be.

A report from Taiwan’s Economic Daily News says that the specific MediaTek processor used could be either the "quad-core MT6732 64-bit chip clocked at 1.5GHz, or the octa-core MT6752 SoC running at a frequency of 2.0GHz." Both would be powerful chips with Mali-T760 GPUs, and LTE capable, but the real news is that both chips would be 64-bit and use the new ARMv8 instruction set (which is the real reason 64-bit mobile chips offer big performance boosts).

MediaTek devices tend to be seen as somewhat "lesser" because of the budget pricing on the devices, but these chips sound pretty serious. They may not stack up exactly to a Snapdragon 801, but when you're paying $100 full price for a smartphone, you shouldn't be expecting that anyway.

But Mediatek commits gross violations of the GNU General Public License. They demand a fee when asked for the source, lol.

Isn't the whole purpose of nexus devices is to be a standard for developers to work on?

yeah true but mediatek is changing in big ways now and is targeting USA with integrated LTE chips like 6595 so that is about to change . recently mediatek also came out and said it will release android 4.4 source for 6589,6582,6592 chips .. now how much do they stand on their words remain to be seen..

but with all the rebranding and expansion looks like things will be better for consumers..

I am sure google would force mediatek to release source and that should open the gates for development (I hope I am not wrong). I would like to see Octacore with decent 5/8 mp camera and good screen for 150$ (10k INR)

BTW what is advantage of 64 bit CPU in mobiles?

similiar to 32bit and 64bit in x86 but in mobile, not much application as yet, though its more future proof but just like ART over dalvik u may lose support for older apps unless the apps are updated for it

64 bit isn't much useful unless the application is itself coded to take advantage for 64 bit..

the real performance gain will come from Arm v8 instruction set..

how many times should i repeat it will not loose support, it is 32 bit compatible with older apps... Mr. Cyber geniu

you seem a little "zoned" out i assume
for eg try running xp software on windows 7
im sure u got the idea
it may or may not lose support
u need to get ur facts right before correcting others
when iphone 5s released alot of older apps refused to run without an update

lol you have dropped to now default Custom titles lol.. how low can you go.. ?

yeah windows XP and Windows 7 are two very different Operating systems with very very different kernels and core basics and mostly all windows xp apps runs fine on windows 7 ( if both are 32 bit )

regarding Apple iphone 5s .. IOS 7 is 64 bit .. obviously if your OS is 64 bit then it will have problem running old apps that were made for 32 bit and will need to be updated for 64 bit.... though i am not 100% sure about it..
i googled it and it showed apple has made that compulsory in the sdk that they need to be updated.. so it is apple's issue

if tomorrow mediatek launches 64 bit CPU with android 4.4 kitkat all old apps will run fine without updating it .. and there is no need for google to launch 64 bit OS until (i read somewhere android is already 64 bit ready but i maybe wrong not sure about it) at least 64 bit hardware is widely adopted..

You will have absolutely NO incompatibility issues in a nexus device.. PERIOD
Im sure Google will take steps to fix any problem 64 bit will cause on older apps .. Google isnt EA games that they will release a product without addressing issues like this

I really wish this comes true and people stop buying Karbonn/mmx and their company shuts down and the managers come on the road unable to provide for their children. The way that they have tortured me and others while flatly denying customer service, at least i deserve that much.
