What are the typical working hours in IT(India) ?

I recently went through this article,

British Bosses Should Follow German Ministry's Idea To Stop Burnout, Say Experts | Huffington Post

(A bit late though, but that is due to my own schedule running behind times)

Which led me to thinking about the state of affairs here in India. I'm not looking to create a poll or anything like that but just responses from people working in IT roles would suffice

The problem is, there is no information regarding the subject on work hours. I googled a lot but so far all I could gather was something coming from the early 2000s or so. Or maybe, if I ploughed through job boards I can see that almost every opening require a 24x7 shift

Is it so ?

No, I mean like seriously. Is IT becoming the new call center or such ? Why is there a 24x7 clause ? I know there is this problem of clashing time zones and such, but what exactly does this clause 24x7 mean ?

I recently became interested in networking (I'm in my second year) and I find that almost every opening require you to be comfortable to work in 24x7 shifts. So is it just a fixed shift or is it a rotating shift ?

Is the grunt work (AFAIK, networking figures pretty low compared to coding as per popular opinion) really worth it ? (I mean, is there adequate compensation for working at night)

I know that software guys don't have to do all that because they just develop and not maintain unlike networking guys who have to keep the pipes running and that sort

I don't want to drag on this already obvious post but, can anybody enlighten me as to what working hours should be expected when accepting any IT role, generally speaking (networking, particularly speaking) ?

Is this blown out of proportion or is it really that dark and disturbing ?

(Sorry for the excessive whitespace and the little rant but I hope you understand :D)

Actually its much worse than that, while my company enforces a 9hr work policy, its minimum 9 hrs, I'd worked upto 12hrs in office and then a few more hrs in home with phone, so that's 15-16hrs, it may sound impossible but it's true. IT is one of the most unhealthy industry(both ways) to work for now a days. Its much more noticeable in support services. Here in India you cannot chose your role at starting. When you have say less than 5 yrs of experience, you won't get a choice. Just because you are a good coder that doesn't mean you'll go into development, but usually development work has good shifts, except for once in a while you'll have to stay late at time of deployment. Support, specially ITIS has rotating shifts for sure, I'd say stay away from ITIS.

Dreaming
depends on company, team, project and time of year
some companies, the startups, except you to work 12+, they pay good and equity also.. you will get rich if company goes big.

most companies its 8-9hrs but there are few terrible companies that make you work a lot.
in most other big companies, I know for sure the work is chill.. at times when there are issues, you hv to work overtime of course.

but working 8 hrs and the travel, the day is finished, you will have little time for personal stuff in the evening.

Oh wait, are speaking of IT department(support) in IT companies ? then you are screwed.

my friends r working 12-13 hours per day in tcs and infosys including saturday and sunday .if one can read that amount of time in our very important stage of life rather working as a low grade it engineer (am talking about the age of 24-28 ) one can easily clear other good exams like gate, cat, ssc cgl or upsc .it guys really have no lives to be honest.i dont even understand how its even considered as a good job by many .

Most of us got this job during college and its often the only job we get(I got two but both IT companies), and a lot of us have education loans to repay, or they have to support their families, some of us want to gather experience for mba or even exams like Bank PO where now a days some experience matters during the interviews. Now a days, just clearing the aptitude is no longer enough to get a job, it will get you through entrance exams like GATE or some government jobs, but not PSU/Bank job interviews that easily.

And finally one thing I'd like to say, ONSITE, mwahahahaha

tkin, bank PO job is very monotonous & depending on the branch you may have to work almost same hours as in IT.even on an average a bank PO has to work ~8-9 hours 6 days a week & in hand salary is ~29k not to mention rural/semi-urban posting in initial years.better go for IT officer job in banks which is at least relevant to your education.SBI PO has highest salary(~39k in hand from the beginning) & perks but also has the highest workload & most chances of posting in rural areas not to mention toughest competition among all bank exams(~17 lakhs including those from IIT,NIT & IIM for ~1800 posts).best option would be to clear ssc cgl exam to get an interview post but thanks to cheating scandals don't expect to get job through cgl exam for at least 2 years from the day of 1st exam/tier-1(cgl-2013 was cancelled just yesterday after 1 year court case & re-exam in 7 cities on 27th apr,no idea about re-exam dates of remaining centres & forget about cgl-2014 for now).

Usually 8 to 9 hrs at max. I simply deny if I am asked to work for more hours.
I work in IT Service organization , unfortunately. So yeah , life is screwed at times. Indeed.! I just wished I was in Core-IT sector , at least I wouldn't have to deal with intense pressure of work in Support functions.

IT Service industry is plauged by extended work hours , and lesser pay compared to Core-IT industries. But that's obvious......

how much bad bank job may be still its not as monotonous as software job .i hav seen hundreds n hundreds of guys even getting 30-35 k in software coming to bank.but agree on ur 2nd part ssc cgl is the best.but again disagree on ur later part.dont know for all guys but certainly for me 2013 reexam all over india is just a sweet blessing in disguise for me.last year in 2013 i had no idea wat this ssc is as i was new new passed out from btech .so just sat for the exam without much preparation.so couldnot clear the paper.this time i am certainly well prepared and will get another free chance of 2013.so in all ways a win win for me.and regarding ur 2 yrs time it will take ,i am in contact with ssc officials bro.nothing of that sort will happen.see as per my knowledge ssc cgl 13 reexam all over india will be held in june, tier 2 in sept .then cgl 14 tier 1 in nov and tier 2 in feb-march and those who still fail top qualify will get a shot again after 3 months in the form of 15.so contrary to ur logic i think this is the best chance for candidates in history of ssc to clear the exam as we r getting 3 chances in just a little over 1 yr if we coiunt 2015 ssc.and if u crack cgl 13 u will know ur tier 2 result around nov by which u can be 95 percent sureu r selected or not u just hav to give interview only to know which posts u get.moreover with coming of 7th pay comission ssc guy will get around 75 k from 2016 which a software guy can only dream of and which will be at par with psu engineers like nalco n iocl who gets such coveted job by cracking gate .so al in all a win win for all ssc aspirants .cheers :)

i certainly dont blame u.the fault lies in our country .after working for so hard for 4 yrs wat we get is loads of these companies and who in their right mind would not take this job in the in the midst of loan and that too pressure on parents.wat i am saying is if u r not from iits or nits ur life is screwed .u just hav to be satisfied on these low paying jobs or give exams again to lead a decent life .very very pathetic education system in our country.and add to this those foolish iims will see everything a candidate has done from birth till date to give him a seat .one bad acad in ur life u r screwed.no 2nd chance in this country.even if u score 99 percentile and one bad acad year game over for u .so its best to do govt job like ssc cgl, with a position like iti inspector or cbi u can come in contact with many high profile guys read businessman, start ur own business with their help becoz u would be getting a lot of time to do ur business unlike those pvt corporate guys even from iims and can easily come at par with iim guys in terms of money if u r intelligent n smart enof to run a businesss.
