Hey guys,

Trying to setup a family PC for one of my relatives, they are tight on budget, it would be great if we can have everything within 25k, else they are ok to stretch until 30k. Please see the responses within the template below and suggest a complete rig, also one with a decent upgrade path, know its too much to ask given the budget, but whatever optimum would be great.

1. What is the purpose of the computer? What all applications and games are you going to run? (Stupid answers like 'gaming' or 'office work' will not work. Be exact. Which games? Which applications? Avoid the word 'et cetera.')

Ans:

  • Gaming
  • Programming C, JAVA, the works..
  • Browsing
  • Desktop Processing
  • Photoshop
  • Watching HD movies

2. What is your overall budget? If you can extend a bit for a more balanced configuration, then mention this too.
Ans: 25k, hard stop at 30k

3. Planning to overclock?
Ans:Nope

4. Which Operating System are you planning to use?
Ans:Win 7/8

5. How much hard drive space is needed?
Ans:Not really sure, but 1TB seems to be the sweet spot

6. Do you want to buy a monitor? If yes, please mention which screen size and resolution do you want. If you already have a monitor and want to reuse it, again mention the size and resolution of monitor you have.
Ans:20' whatever is the sweet spot

7. Which components you DON'T want to buy or which components you already have and plan on reusing?
Ans:None

8. When are you planning to buy the system?
Ans: In a week or so

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
Ans:I will be helping a relative build one.

This is what i have thought about so far:

  • CPU - Intel G2010
  • Motherboard - H61 or H75
  • GPU - 7750 may not fit in budget

for motherboard OP should go for Asus p8b75 m lx ~ 3.8k
else everything is fine :)

Thanks guys, the i3 + H61 or H75 seems like a decent platform to begin with. The H75 Asus board costs 5.2k.

Isn't FX-6300 @ 7.3K + GA-78LMT-USB3 @ 3.4K a better solution?

Cilus, this a good alternative, but just apprehensive about the upgrade path, your suggestions?

In case of Intel any LGA 1151 socket Processor like i3 3220, your upgrade path is pretty much closed and belive me after 1 year when 90% of the games will become multi-threaded, you will find hard time to get a Ivy Bridge i5 Processor.
Now if you go with FX-6300, you are pretty much safe for at least 1 and half year in terms of multi-threaded performance. In fact gaming will be much better experience with it in future. If you want good upgrade path then spend a little extra on motherboard and get something like Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3 @ 5.1K or GA-970A-UD3 @ 6.6K. AMD's upcoming Steam Roller Processors will be supported in AM3+ socket and you can easily upgrade your processor even in distant future.

Point taken, but I am kind of clutching at straws here, with a 30k budget, may have to go down on the GPU, what else would work with the budget if we go with the FX6300?
