Buying Advice for Intel E5200

Scoob

Hello, guys. Before starting i am very new to Over clocking. So i want to know which motherboard is good for OC'ing Intel Dual Core E5200. I Hereby post my Configuration.

Processor - Intel Dual Core - E5200 @ 2.5Ghz
Motherboard - Intel DG31PR
Ram - Kingston 2GB DDR2
Graphics Card - Nvidia 9500GT

I want to know which mother board will be best for overclocking, because i planned to upgrade this PC ( I know its old but i am sentimentally attached to this PC, so i cant just throw it). So please help me with choosing the motherboard. I planned to buy new DDR3 (2x4GB), PSU, Heatsink and Cabinet. Budget around 8000 to 10000. Actually i am considering this Gigabyte-GA-G41-M-Combo. But i don't know i can overclock with this motherboard or not. So please suggest me some good components. Thanks.

P.S: Please provide me the link for the components to buy it online if its possible.

^^With that budget i seriously ask you to reconsider not switching to a sandy bridge pentium. That stock pentium will be way faster than your oced wolfie.
You re-use the other components,at least the HDD, all ur fond memoirs go in there.... so its not like u threw the whole stuff away :)

Not true -
Overclocked E5200 VS New Pentium G620
But yes they are almost equal . Also g620 has quite lower power consumption.
+ with g620 , one will be future proofed.

@op - Can I ask you if there is any reason for your urge to overclock ?
I mean , if there is none , than overclock will be useless. Higher power consumption for no solid reason

BMG ftw!!
G41 m combo is a decent overclock. Don't expect extravagant overclocking from it.
P.S. getting all those in 10K isn't possible.

Firstly, they overclocked the CPu to 4GHZ!!!! From 2.5Ghz to 4Ghz!And that too no clear positives about the same

Secondly if you look at the test sub system, they used a ASUS P43 mobo. Hitting 333 FSB (multi being 12) on a budget g41 seems to be quite a ask, given that the overall the board itself isnt built ground up for serious Ocing- if not the FSB wall we assume it will hit, i'm more worried about the VRM on that budget board.

Secondly the power draw, as you pointed out early is way off the graph. And finally, the cpu cooler , i dont think a budget cooler would suffice for quite an oc.

Running a OCED cpu 24X7 or even with EISTon doesnt seem to wise to me.

Thats why i say a more real comparison would this one, heres the comparison with a E6300, thats a 2.8 Ghz chip, one of the last wolfie pentiums.

My point is clock for clock, the sandy bridge pentium is way ahead of a dead 775 architechture. In order to atleast bring these two cpu to a level playing field, a lot of cost-ineffective solutions would have to be conjured.

Then according to you, why people are buying unlocked processors?
Just to have the letter 'K' at the end of the model number?

You need to work on your sarcasm. Understand the context here before letting out a ~snipped~.
We are talking about an oced wolfie here , not a sandy or an ivy bridge . A 1.6X oced wolfie on a budget board has its implications.

d6bmg, try to understand the context first and then comment. The main purpose of a K series processsor is to enable overclocking withount increasing the FSB or BCLK and for E5200 you need to increase the FSB which in turns increase the speed of PCI-E Bus and Ram. For a bucget board, handling that much of FSB increase is seriously in question. On the other hand, in unlocked processors, the speed can be increased by the combination of Multiplier and FSB.

@OP
Or a Wolfdale or the likes could have been overclocked more easily if it had unlinked memory or had Nvidia chipset atleast, how I miss Nvidia when its chipsets! I wish they make a comeback again. Anyways be happy with what you have or better get a system overhaul. The idea of a P41 with linked Ram... high latencies......not a good idea and then no heat sink for the VRs ...dangerous recipe for overclocking. Since you have a budget of Rs 10000 better get an

Intel i3 2120 - Rs 6900
Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H - Rs 4300

This should be your next worthwhile an upgrade.

e5200 is really easy to overclock . I had overclocked my friend's e5200 to 3.65ghz without any problem. I could've gone further , but alas that lame power supply.

@ hitesh:
You would agree with me that a lot of things go into making an oced system stable.Yes wolfies(45nm) were known as great ocers in their day. But it again depends a lot on the chip itself. Even with similar setups you may have a case where one cpu hits the desired mark at way lower cpu voltage than the other, sometimes even if they are cousins from the same batch. As you figured out one yourself..the power draw drastically increases..Even those seemingly minute voltage bumps to cpu/ram takes a toll on the sub systems.

The things is that we are not saying its impossible, its just that it becomes risky with components that were not built to take in the abuse :p

Btw , just asking as to how where you testing the stability? Was it a progressive bump untill a BSOD/Boot Fail or prime/1-hr gaming sessions?
