xp not hibernating

my xp is not hibernating whenever i tries to enable hibernate in power options
xp gives a message that "the file is being used by another program".
plz suggest what to do.

No, it is not enabled by default. In this case even after you enable it, you won't get a "HIBERNATE" option in shut down screen.You will have to press SHIFT while clicking "STAND BY" to hibernate.

Standby saves your data in the RAM thereby enabling you to resume them asap

Hibernate saves the data to the HDD and then turns off using ACPI thereby enabling us to resume faster without losing any data


To enable Hibernate, go to POWER OPTIONS and then there will be an option to enable Hibernation

(Keep in mind that enabling HIBERNATION will approximately take about 1 GB of partition space)

Obviously Hibernation is a better option as in the event of a power cut,
making a computer come from standby mode would cause a strain on UPS and can even result in Data Loss,while Hibernation on the other hand saves the data as a snapshot and then temporarily shuts down the system using ACPI.

HIBERNATE OPTION TAKES AS MUCH SPACE AS YOUR RAM...
SO IF THAT GUY HAS 4 GB OF RAM THEN HIBERNATE WILL TAKE 4 GB OF SPACE ON HIS PRIMARY PARTION[I.E. WINDOWS PARTION(C: IN MOST CASES)]
AND IF HE HAS 256 MB OF RAM THEN IT WILL TAKE 256 MB ON HIS DRIVE......
PLZ CHECK UR SOURCES AGAIN

and as far as ur problem is concerned then trying freeing some space the amount of ur RAM on your primary partition...
i don't know whether this will work for you ...
but that's all i've got for now...

it works for me....everytime i have a question i first try to find it in my school library ,internet and still if unsuccessful then i move towards this section of the forum...
don't take me wrong...but its better to do things urself first..atleast attempt to do so.....
everyone likes to get readymade things on a silver platter but those who slog for it really enjoy that experience...

Err... low on the formatting but here's my understanding

Hibernation saves the data on the ram right? So even if I have a 4 gig ram, it wont be full ever! I mean even a 1 gig ram is never full under most of the conditions now, so why would it store an entire 4 gig ?

good point ...actually this is one question i've been asking myself for quite a long time..but never got the answer yet...........

dude my ram is 612mb(640-32)and it requires 612mb on disk...btw my ram is neva full...on avg 150mb....so 4gb ram meams it will require 4 gb on HD..


BTW...hibernate is great...i love this option....

No one is here trying to reply what the author has asked in the first place.
Even I am facing the same problem and all you people are doing is 'doing research on hibernation', but what about the MAIN problem? (Read the first post!)

i had that prob long time ago and you can search the forum for the answer. Though plz try to do following ....

Have you done a complete virus check? Also have you checked your system for spyware/Malware? Make sure that your anti virus software is up to date before you run it. If you haven't got spyware/malware finding software i suggest you download and run the free versions of Ad-Aware SE (www.lavasoftusa.com) and spybot search and destroy (www.safer-networking.org)

Reboot your machine and enter Safe Mode. You do this by tappinng the F8 key as your pc reboots until a menu appears. From the menu select safe mode.

Once in Safe Mode click the Start button followed by All programs > Acessories > Command prompt. In the command prompt window type the following and then press Enter:

del/a:s hiberfil.sys

Hopefully this should delete the hibernation file and you can then boot your pc normally and enable it from the power options.

i have resolved my problem this way.

NB:: Do you have Cyberlink PowerDVD installed in your PC. if so please disable the power option from the settings; cuz cyberlink power option makes some modification in the default power settings.
