Right off the assembly line
I recently discovered that I am not able to boot my computer in Safe Mode. I am able to start the machine and press F8. It does bring me to the Safe Mode screen with all the various choices and I select "Safe Mode". It goes to the safe mode screen and loads all the drivers ending with "mup" and then brings me to a WinXP logon screen to give me a choice of either logging in as Administrator or my User (which does have admin privileges). When I select either one, the computer just reboots in normal mode. I have also tried to use the msconfig method to boot into safe mode but all that results in doing is cycling me through reboots. I end up having to boot using a previous last known good configuration from the safe mode screen to stop the recycling when using the msconfig method. I would just like to use my Norton Antivirus program in Safe Mode to scan my system which I tend to do from time to time just to make sure I do not have any nasty stuff on my computer. At present, I am unable to do this. I do not suspect any malware/spyware but I rather suspect it is a registry problem moreso. Can anyone help me in narrowing down the possibilities of what may be causing this problem? Any help would be appreciated.

after f8...try the other safe boot options

else try last good configuration.

else try this
close all open programs.
click Start, Run and type MSCONFIG in the box and click OK
the System Configuration Utility appears, On the BOOT.INI tab, Check the "/SAFEBOOT" option, and then click OK and Restart your computer when prompted.
the computer will restart in Safe mode.
perform the troubleshooting steps for which you are using Safe Mode.
when you are finished with troubleshooting in Safe mode, open MSCONFIG again, on the BOOT.INI tab, uncheck "/SAFEBOOT" and click OK to restart your computer

else u may have to repair your xp installation : *www.techspot.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8356

ps : i know, it appears that u have tried most of the above...but i am nevertheless posting the options again...

In the zone
*try "ctrl" instead of f8.
or
*if not successful, select safe mode by f8,after pressing enter-press"ctrl" .

i had similar problem, but by using "ctrl",instead of f8,successful boot in safe mode.
