Wiser to buy new setup?

Hi, my motherboard has faulted and i already have a working p4 1.7ghz processor and a flat panel monitor and peripherals and power supply. my question is whether i should just replace the board with a biostar g31 socket 478 for 5000 bucks or to buy a new board+processor? plz tell me what budget board and cpu combo are available for low price range under 10k. i'll need onboard video and audio and one ide connector. what do i do? tia

It will definitely make sense to buy a new PC now imho. You can buy a new Socket 478 motherboard, but I don't think it is worth it.

You'll end up replacing almost everything if you go for a new CPU + motherboard combo.

Since you will be buying a new CPU and motherboard, you'll need the latest DDR3 RAM. Also, most probably your Hard Disk and CD/DVD Writer are IDE....you'll need a new SATA Hard Disk and DVD Writer. A new power supply would also be needed.

Result = completely new PC.

And for that, I seriously recommend you to increase your budget and get something which lasts you. Just like your Pentium 4 lasted.

From the PC Confguration Guide, this is the minimum you should be aiming at.

Component | Make | Price Processor |AMD Athlon II X2 250|2800
Motherboard |Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2P (rev. 3.1)|2800
RAM |2GB DDR3 RAM (G-skill F3-10600CL9S-2GBNT)|750
HDD |Seagate 250GB 7200.12|3400
DVD Writer |ASUS 24X Sata Black DVD|1150
PSU |FSP Saga II 400W|1900
| Total |12800

Ok, i've settled on gigabyte ga880gm-usb3 as my board but i want to know something:
online specs say that it has onboard a/v and lan and also an ide connector which can be split to two devices. so that takes care of most things. can anyone confirm if it has the ide con.? and will the ide be speedy enough to get by for a few months? since my monitor and peripherals are fairly new i just have to buy a mb and cpu. ok on a budget of 11-12k total which quad cpu would be good for that board? i just need enough power to play flash games and steam games on good settings. and good audio/video editing horsepower and run photoshop/cad smoothly. i'm posting from phone so cant fill the questionnaire but i'll clarify on anything. also this is not important but will the 'am3Plus ' cpus be compatible with that board in case i want to upgrade after few years? thanks

1) IDE hard disk drives are slow. If you have one and want to use it, it is your wish.

2) You need DDR3 RAM for this. I don't know whether you have DDR3 RAM since you said you are replacing a Pentium 4 machine.

3) "peripherals are fairly new i just have to buy a mb and cpu" - how would we know that the components/peripherals you are talking about are "fairly new"? Mention those. This forum is all about being specific on what you have.

4) Revision 3.1 of Gigabyte 880GM-USB3 has a black AM3+ socket. If you get one you'd be able to fit in the next generation of AMD processors which came out last quarter and might come out this year. So, get the AM3+ revision 3.1 of the motherboard.

5) "few years" - hard to guess. most likely Intel and AMD are changing their sockets next year. CPU technology keeps on evolving and it gets harder to maintain compatibility. "Few years" is a lot of time.

6) "flash games" - okay will run fine. "Steam games on good settings" - which Steam games? What settings? Running games depends on the GPU, not CPU.

7) Power supply - I doubt you have a good power supply. Read this thread - *www.thinkdigit.com/forum/power-sup...89-power-supply-blacklist-thread-newbies.html You'll have to change your Power supply too.

8) Processor could be Athlon II X4 640/45 or Phenom II X4 840. Both cost around Rs. 5000.

Time is wasted in asking these questions, and that's the reason why we tell everyone to fill up the questionnaire and answer every question asked their in accurate manner. :)

i guess After the launch of the bulldozers AMD stopped Athloon II X3 and X4 production and they are even planing to stop Phenom II X6 series :(

better go with a
955BE for 5.8k
GA-880GM-USB3 4.8k
Corsair 4GB value select 1.2k
FSP SAGA II 500watts PSU 2.2k
Asus 24x DVD writer 1.15k

total 15.15k
u can get nothing better then that :p

try flipkart,itwares,deltapage,itdepot,bitfang,smcinternational

as far as i know none of the above sites have a 955 available.you should increase your budget a bit & buy 965BE before its stock ran out too.as for hard disk minimum you will get is 250gb for ~3700.

it seems like price of 880GM usb3 is high.a few weeks ago it was ~4900-5000.no idea about offline price.

Hello, i have a question. i bought all the parts for my config including the 4gb ram, dvd burner and 880gm-d2h mobo. now i just need a cpu and hdd. first should i go for 955 be or 965 be? and i read in another thread that there is a sata to pata converter that can make a ide drive work. will it make my drive function as a regular bootable drive that i can install windows on? also will using an ide drive be painfully slow In basic usage compared to sata or just speedy enough to let me get by for a few months after which i can upgrade? because right now i don't have enough money for a new hdd as well and if i buy one i'll have to buy a cheaper dual core. thanks for your suggestions.

DisappearingOak, PATA IN/SATA Out Converters might work or might not...it is not Guaranteed. However, they are cheeap, around 100/150 bucks. So you can try it out. If it works out then use the old IDE HDD for couple of days, until the HDD prices come down a little.

but the thing is, a pata to sata converter may work on the shopkeepers PC but your pc may fail to recognize the same.

also go for Phenom II X4 960T

The hard drive market isnt looking too pretty at the moment. Prices may be on the higher side for quite some time to allow the companies to recover losses suffered in the floods

I got the 965 be yesterday and built the computer and it started up fine the first time (this is the first pc i've assembled). but the bad news is that the Enter bidirectional pata to sata converter i bought isn't being detected in the bios. bad luck, i guess. so now i'll have to wait for a sata hard disk.

anyway, does anyone have a clue if linux live CDs run without a hard disk installed? also, where in kolkata can i buy linux cds, anyone know? thanks much.
